Good afternoon, New Beer folks! This corner of the PNW is warm today, will be warm tomorrow, and ratchets up to full-on hot next week. Sounds like good weather for a kölsch, and fortunately I have a new one right here...

(Standard disclaimer: No review posted yet, as I'm still working out the numbers.)

Block 15 Alumni Club - Minnesota Chapter
16-ounce can purchased at John's Marketplace in Beaverton, OR. The readable part of the date stamp tells me this beer was canned on 06/13/23. Poured in stages into a Reissdorf Kölsch 0.2L stange.

    Look:
The body is pale straw yellow and perfectly clear. Up top there's a tenacious head of bright white foam with surprising retention that leaves festive lacing and freshness rings after every sip.

    Smell:
Leads with gentle bready malt flavors which morph into a modest but mouth-watering fruitiness (green grape, apple skin). Fresh floral notes in the finish.

    Taste:
The flavor closely follows the nose, with lightly toasted malt up front, bready and satisfying. The middle is softly fruity and more nuanced than the nose: dry white wine, red apple, a bit of nectarine, a subliminal touch of berries on the breath. Malt, fruit, and mild floral bitterness harmonize nicely in the crisp finish.

    Feel:
The body is on the medium side of light, with a rounded texture and zippy carbonation. Exceptional drinkability.

    Overall:
In a good kölsch, subtlety and balance and drinkability are key takeaways. Block 15 Alumni Club - Minnesota Chapter delivers on every point. The beer is crisp and light but doesn't skimp on flavor. The malt is satisfying and the dry-hopping adds delicate fruity complexity which doesn't overstay its welcome. Very nice beer, especially on this warm afternoon.

MF: Medium body, moderate carbonation, nicely balanced

Nice easy drinker, a little below standards for these guys

    Good evening all!
I have been enjoying a big stout late in the evening lately, and tonight is no exception.
Courtesy of the Extreme Stouts box-
    [IMG]
Poured stout black and sported a beige, 3 cm head that dissipated slowly and left decent lacing.
Aroma was lost on my Covid affected nose.
The taste was good: I got the standard imperial stout roasted malts in the form of toast and dark chocolate, touch of coffee and the normal dark fruit (figs, raisins, plums) had company- an almost tart cherry flavor that was subtle but definitely there. I can only guess that was the persimmon.
The feel was a little thinner than I generally expect for imperial stouts, which makes the 11% ABV just a little too quaffable.
OA, tasty stout, I may even buy another one if I can, just to verify what I tasted.
    Cheers all! And good night!

    Great lakes kick around.
    ...semi clear gold orange appearance.
...medium light carbonation with a close to medium body.
...aroma is exactly what was advertised, orange, passion fruit, guava, salt, malt, and some fruit punch.
...taste mixed fruit that comes off real and not artificial at all. Tropical fruit punch that has a slight dry element .
...this was a really well done fruit beer[IMG]

Uberbrew The Bruce Scoth Ale, 6.9% ABV; 3.89 overall

Pours a chestnut color with a thumb+ of tan head. No head retention or lacing

S: Toasty, a little brown bread.

T: Toasty, some caramel, a little of booze one the tongue , some peatyness up front. Toasty notes, caramel/toffee, dryness & a little peat as this beer warms up. Finishes a little toasty, with peatyness & dryness

    MF: Medium/heavy body, modest carbonation

Solid take on the style, wish the nose was better. This would make me want to try more of their beers. This is a style I wish more brewers would take a stab at.

    Roughtail Brewing's Ozark Howler's Half-shirt Hazy DIPA, 8.0% ABV; 4.23 overall

Brewed with Citra, Nelson & Motueka hops

Pours a hazed gold with one finger of eggshell colored head. Above average head retention & great lacing

S: Guava, mango & oranges, fades a touch down the stretch

T: Follows the nose, a little dryness, plus pineapple up front. Mangoes, guava & pomelo as this beer warms up, some green melon as well, a little booze bite, plus dryness & lime. Finishes with pineapple, a little lime, some coconut & tangerine

MF: Medium body, subdued carbonation, nice balance

If had to guess the ABV, I'd peg it at about 8.2% ( edit, just found it; 8.0% ). Drinks well for the heft, another winner from these guys

Thank you for your high praise! Not sure how they will get both the Busch Series race in this morning, and the Winston Cup race scheduled for 4PM, as there will be rain off and on until the afternoon. Glad the main race is on NBC, will try to stream the other one online via USA channel. I will be pulling for guys I still remember and like:
    1. (10) A. J. Allmendinger #16 Kaulig Racing - Chevrolet
    2. (18) Kyle Busch #8 Richard Childress Racing - Chevrolet
    3. (20) Brad Keselowski #6 RFK Racing - Ford
    4. (35) Kevin Harvick #4 Stewart-Haas Racing - Ford
Also, Vivid is a solid WCIPA @ovaltine . Navaja is still available at Half Acre, I believe it's Chicago's best current WCIPA in production (RIP Spiteful Bike Messenger Appreciation IPA).

Will return shortly with my selection for the day.

Welcome to New Beer Sunday #958! As promised, part two of the Maplewood tasting.

    Maplewood Gold Noise

    Can Notes:
Purchased 4 pack for $11.07 refrigerated on 5/9 at Maplewood's Brewery, refrigerated until today. Dortmunder-Style Lager, 16 oz, 5.5% ABV. No can date, social media noted release date 4/27/23. Brewed and canned by Maplewood Brewing Company, 2717 N. Maplewood Ave., Chicago, Illinois.

    Appearance:
Multiple pours into a slender pilsner glass. Humidity cover masks a crystal clear golden straw colored base, light to mild carbonation, bright white bubbly head that leaves clumpy lacing and a soft bubbly cover over the base. 4.25

    Aroma:
Bread, glorious bread, cracker, salt and pepper, lemon grass. Bread comes in strong, the rest subtle / gentle. 4.5

    Taste:
Oh yeah! Tastes as good as it smells . Glorious bread, cracker, salt (medium / personal salt note), and pepper. Hop bitterness and feel felt more than tasted. getting light grassy presence. 4.25

    Mouthfeel:
Light mild to prickly carbonation, medium body, drinks light and easy, balanced with a light dry, salty finish. Leans bitter, sweet flavors contained by the hops.Nice. 4.25

    Overall:
Really enjoying this beer, more one note than I expected, but this bread salted cracker is really enjoyable, stoked I have three more of these in the refrigerator. I've only had one other Dortmunder style beer, and really liked it as well, so need to find more of these. Not sure how consistent either fit with the style, but this pilsner/kolsch hop/malt approach to Lager is very enjoyable. 4.25

Time will tell if this weekend thread will be extended to cover through the Fourth of July Holiday, with many here also off on Monday, July 3rd. @FBarber @sulldaddy @Roguer

If not, I hope all of you have a happy and safe Fourth of July celebration! May open the thread next week early as well to accommodate tailgating at my first White Sox game since Spring Training 2020.

Brewers notes: Very DDDoubleganger is the ultimate expression of our Alter Ego family of beers.

Born out of a desire to continue pushing the envelope, this beer will ignite your senses in every way with epic hop saturation propelled by a dense body and tongue-coating mouthfeel. Pouring a wild hazy orange color into your glass, this beast carries dense notes of tropical fruit, a medley of mango and citrus, and summer stone fruit that is so juicy it's hard to believe it is concocted of just water, malt, hops, and yeast. It finishes cleanly with a palate-coating bitterness that entices your next sip. Rivaled only by the Almighty Julius, this one is truly special-Enjoy!

Canned 6.23, opened 7.1, poured into a pretentious beer glass “Live well”, dark hazy Orange
Liquid, one finger off white foam cap

    Aroma is stone fruit

Taste is stone fruit, dank finish

Smooth with a hop bite on the finish

    good beer

I am a BIG Navaja fan - so much so that I muled a 4-pack to Aruba a few years ago on a trip to the island with Mrs O. I get a little Half Acre distro here in South Bend, but it's limited to Daisy Cutter and Tome for the most part. I've asked for Navaja from my local but no dice so far.

[IMG] Rock Cut Brewing Wooden Raven Bourbon Imperial Stout. Poured into a 16 oz Snulip glass not sure of the ABV bottled on 12/22/2022. Pours a beautiful near pitch black with half finger light brown head that leaves some thin streaks of lace, with solid retention. 4.5

Aroma is deep dark chocolate, oaky vanilla, roasted coffee beans, back strap molasses, and nice slightly charred bourbon. 4.5

Taste follows dark chocolate, roasty coffee beans, molasses, vanilla, and did I mention a big hit of bourbon in the lingering finish. 4.5

Mouthfeel is a little above average, gentle carbonation, maybe a tad dry as you would expect, and for the style it has massive flavor with excellent drinkability. 4.5

Overall this is an excellent old school BA RIS. I would recommend for sure, but not if you only like stouts with adjuncts in them. This was made with passion and I feel another 6 months and this might get even better. 4.5 Cheers all.

Happy new beer Sunday! Here's a couple beers I got from @GreenBayBA and @cheeseheadinMinneapolis last weekend:

    Bock of the Future
    [IMG]
    Appearance: Clear gold, good head.

    Smell: Bready, mineraly.

Taste: Bready then a rising sweetness and a hint of phenolic bite. A bit of tea-like bitterness in the finish. Syrupy feel.

Overall: I don't have a lot of experience with bocks, this is a pretty big and filling beer, nice bready flavor with interesting notes from the yeast and hops.

    Lazy Monk Bohemian Pilsner
    [IMG]
    Appearance: Clear gold, huge head.

    Smell: Dough, yeasty.

Taste: Bready, malty, then some pear fruits in the middle. Not too sweet. Medium bodied.

Overall: A gifted beer from a recent beer share/tasting. I prefer my pilsners a little drier and hoppier than this. I suppose the Lazy Monks wanted some hefty liquid bread.

Thanks guys! Might be back later with some more...

A couple of errands have been completed and now I'm back by the lake on a dreary rain-filled day with not much to do except play games and enjoy a few beers. Sounds like a good enough agenda for me!

Today's first beer is Oak Aged Patience Like a Buffalo, a collaboration between Kent Falls and Heirloom Rustic Ales that was bottled in 2020. My wife gave it to me on Easter in 2021 and it's been sitting in my cellar ever since.

Pours a medium gold. Nice, persistent head fed by persistent bubbly carbonation. Aroma is mostly brett and oak, which is consistent with expectations yet relatively unnoteworthy.

Taste is similar to the nose. Brett leads with oak lurking in the background. Doesn't have the most depth or funkiness. Light, lively and easy going down.

Overall, a good, but not great beer that I would have enjoyed even more with a little more complexity. That said, I think this is likely pretty much exactly what the brewers were going for, and it's certainly enjoyable enough.

4.5% gose from Hoof Hearted Brewing

Poured from a pint can, the body is a light yellow, but cloudy as a Gose tends to be. Good initial white head that quickly fades to an extremely minimal ring at the edge. Trace lacing.

The nose is a delightful Nelson. The beer has as good of a nose as a glass of Cabernet might.

Mouthfeel has decent carbonation and is light.

Taste follows nose. Aside from the wine flavor, there's not much going on here Only a bit of sourness and no saltiness or spice. No sign of ABV.

Hoof Hearted gets a pass since I like many of their flavorful beers. Unfortunately this is not one of them.

Third new beer of the weekend, first this Sunday: Ek Chuah's imperial stout by Cigar City, an 11.6% ABV breakfast beer brewed with cacao nibs, a custom coffee blend, cinnamon, chili peppers, and vanilla.

The chocolate is really the star here, and it blends with the base beer in wonderful harmony. The coffee is entirely complementary, which is quite nice. The chili peppers start off quite mild, but they do grow over time, eventually reaching a nice tingly heat on the tongue and throat. I don't notice much cinnamon flavor, which is nice, as that spice can easily overwhelm. Mild to moderately sweet, but very rich.

Good morning NBS/nbw and thanks @ChicagoJ for hosting and keeping the NBS clock running!
It is cool and rainy here in WMass, the kind of morning where you open all the windows and bask in the glory of summer rains symphony.
One week from the arrival of team#1 and our (only) grandchild, we visited them in Taiwan last February, trying to keep up the home and away series as long as we can. They will be here for a month, and we have scheduled our trip for February 2024 already.

Todays offering is from our dear friends in Greensboro Vt. The Song of Summer, back story is the HFB brewed this with nearly all ingredients grown within 10 miles of Greensboro.

So in WMass there are a few brewers who do a good job of local sourcing, and create very good offerings, but this offerings execution sets it apart, Simply put a lovely wheat tilted APA. The orangey/piney hops and grainy wheat base are all dancing in synch.

T - Lemongrass. orange, pine all on a a beautiful snappy cracker malt base, there is a slight peppery finish
M - Medium in body with a smooth texture, not sweet, not not to bitter, and a pleasant dry finish.
O - A very good pale ale, with the wheat driving the boat, hoppy, while staying in tight range. beautiful offering. The bonus here is the story of using the local ingredients.
