If you haven't heard yet, Anchor Brewing Company - a craft beer icon since 1896 - and widely considered to have ushered in the craft beer era under the leadership of Fritz Maytag - is closing down for good at the end of July. Although they were sold to Sapporo in 2017, Anchor remained a recognizable brand on craft beer shelves until recently when it was announced that they would be ending national distribution.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/anchor-brewing-company-to-cease-operations.673501/

I recently grabbed a mixed 12 pack and a 6-pack of the porter to get one last taste of these beers before national distribution ended ... now with the brewery itself closing, it seems even more poignant to revisit these beers, some of which are great classics, one last time.

So, to that end, join in here starting on July 28th for a weekend celebration of all things Anchor Brewing Co. Got some old bottles of their Christmas Ale - crack it for Christmas in July! Never tried one of their beers? Now is your last shot. And if you do trying something new, maybe cross post it with NBW. Finally, take a minute to revisit some of the great classics they've been brewing for a long time like Anchor Steam and Porter on last time.

Please refrain from discussing the actual closure here - for that discussion, use the actual beer news thread already set up to cover it.

Unfortunately, I don't think I can find any in MN. And if do, I am afraid it will be ancient.

I have a couple of cans of Steam but they are old. I don't know why I kept them in the fridge. Maybe now, I will hold onto them as keepsakes. Sad shrugs.

I have 2 each from that same mixed pack and have been enjoying them, and 4 bottles of Old Fogorn.

But yeah, a LOT of vintage OSA -- could be a long weekend.

But I definitely need some Porter for old-time's sake.

Seriously NOT that limber with my beer consumption anymore.

Besides, the last time I tried one of my vintage OSAs, it really hadn't held up well.

Great idea @FBarber! I've got a few stores around that still carry Anchor Steam. Looks like I'm making a beer run real soon.

I ordered my second case of Steam from a local bottle shop I frequent often - they ordered from the distributor who carries Anchor Steam in my area....not many places around here even carry the one flagship beer.....you should be able to do the same - check the Anchor website for who your local distributor is, and then ask your favorite bottle shop to order it for you....I got mine for $9.99 / 6 x 4 (4 six pks to a case)

I'll have to grab a 6'er to celebrate with y'all. Unfortunately the only thing available locally is the Steam beer, but I'm ok with that. I'm saving my last bottle of this year's OSA as a reminder of their legacy. Plus, it wasn't all that good.

Sad news, been drinking Anchor Steam since 1976. A retailer in town has a few 6 packs still in stock I’ll pick one up.

Wow, folks have aleady cleared the shelves of Anchor Steam at one of my close store. Not to fear, I'm ready now.

There was a beer bar open around me for years. They were always known for having mostly IPA's, specifically Stone, but also just "big" beers on tap in general. I saw a guy down a full pint of DFH 120, then a full pint of Real Ale Sisyphus one after the other, and then try to walk to his car (ugh). The Real Ale is a 11.5% ABV barelywine.

They always had Anchor Steam on, and that was what I drank most when I visited. I was never in the mood for a lot beers with ABV in double digits, or near that, when out and about. They closed a long time ago now...

Though there is a newish bar in the general vicinity of that one. A few weeks ago, they just got in Anchor Steam. I went back today, still had it on, and asked about it. They got a handful of kegs when they saw the distribution news, and is probably the last place in town that has it at all. The last time I saw it in stores was when they changed the label, but haven't seen it all since. So, for sure had a few.

Seems in good order. Bready, malty, light bitterness, very balanced. Then some nice fruity esters. Getting banana and pears. The bartender said they had one more keg left in the cooler, I'll be coming here more often while they have it.

I was actually thinking about this next Christmas sadly drinking my remaining Special Ales From the past few years... maybe I'll do the Christmas in July thing so not to incur a sad note around the holidays...

Still have an unopened Magnum of 2000 Our Special Ale (Christmas & New Year) 50.7 oz.

Still hoping someone will pull a Fritz and rescue Anchor again.

I kinda documented that I fairly recently found some relatively fresh Steam to rate it officially in an attempt to complete ticking the beers from the most popular list here. The ironic thing is that I thought, "Hey, I found some relatively fresh west coast OG beer and really like it. I'll definitely check out the core beer section to grab more."

I was even thinking that if we are getting fairly fresh beer, maybe we'll see Old Foghorn again. I was actually thinking the brewery might be heading the opposite direction of what reality decided to throw in my face, unfortunately.

All that said, I have an unopened Anchor Steam sixer to join in, hopefully. They had two facings at TW of April dates last week, thought wonder if/doubt there is any left now.

I believe I saw some at France 44 when I was there late last week. But yeah, it's probably super old.
