For a very similar experience, try a Volksfest. Smaller scale, same vibe, less crowd, more locals. Identical layout, food, music.

Fresing is close to the airport and easy to train to. Erding is also close to the airport and has 2 tents vs the 1 in Freising.

Thanks! Presumably they're not on at the same time as Oktoberfest, though?

    Cheers!

I know its a little more out of the way, but I would always recommend the Cannstatter Volksfest in Stuttgart. Held at the same time of year and much less touristy, but you still get an Oktoberfest feel (big tents, food, carnival rides). Its also overall generally cheaper too. It will be different breweries too (local to Stuttgart vs Munich). Plus, if you like cars, I would strongly recommend a trip to the Porsche and Mercedes museums.

The Cannstatter Volksfest is great fun. Oktoberfest's little brother. The Cannstatter fest draws perhaps 3 million people over it's run, compared to Oktoberfest's 6 million.

I've noticed each of the four breweries' fest beers at Cannstatter can vary in quality from year to year. One year's number three beer to me can be the next year's number one.

It's usually not much of a problem getting into a tent, except if it happens to be raining. I've been stuck outside of a tent in the (covered) biergarten area because of rain. Unfortunately sitting outside instead of being inside is not the same experience. Not nearly as good or fun.

One difference from it's big brother in Munich is that you don't need to be seated at a table to get a beer from the waiters.

Another small difference is that if you order a half chicken it comes with a roll, whereas in Munich you will just get the half chicken.

The Cannstatter fest fires up midway through Oktoberfest. Normally I will visit the Stuttgart fest first, and then work my way down to Munich for the Oktoberfest. But I have also done just the opposite.

Hotel rooms are less expensive in Stuttgart as well.

Getting from Munich to Stuttgart or vice versa takes only a little over two hours by ICE train, and currently costs €15 one-way. That's cheap as hell!

The Erdinger Herbstfest and and Freisinger Volksfest overlap each other a bit, running late August through the first ten days or so of September. Neither overlaps Oktoberfest. And I gotta say, a fresh liter pour of Erdinger Pikantus Weizenbock is incredible. Worth visiting the Erdinger fest just for that.

And if you make the trip to Erding and/or Freising for those fests, it's advisable to also hit the 5 day Gillamoos Volksfest in Abensberg, late August to early September.

Just so you know, the word Fräulein is not favored in Germany these days. It is condidered dismissive and condescending. It wasn't much in use in the late 90s.
