I recently picked up 2 bombers of OG Black Metal during my lunch break. I was feeling pretty awesome that I would have more to age.

One had the classic Gold Cap

The other however had a silver cap which I have never seen. When was the last time JK used silver caps? They run out of gold caps or was that Black Metal from a time of Silver Caps only?

The silver cap was the result of our bottle supplier sending us the wrong bottles (26mm instead of 29mm crown). So we ran to Austin Homebrew and picked up a box of 26mm silver caps.

Thanks! El Cedro tested at 42 IBU. The hop flavor and aroma largely comes from a big charge of Citra in the whirlpool and at dry hop.

Sounds perfect. Citra hops are the greatest hops in the world to me. Now I really can't wait to try this

I thought El Cedro was a hoppy beer indigenous to the Texas Hill Country with the cedar instead of the pine overload. I'm not sure I could drink more than 2, but it is very different and enjoyable. Although a different flavor, it's similar to what Shorts did with their spruce pilsner (but with cedar).

Consider it being OG and Silver top, it must be considered extremely rare. :sunglasses:

That OG Black Metal is officially on whale status now with those caps.

I'm glad you found it enjoyable, but unlike beers like Boxer's Revenge, Das Uberkind/Wunderkind, Funk Metal, Ol Oi and RU-55 which incorporate locally harvested wild yeast, there's nothing indigenous to the Hill Country about it. It was 100% stainless steel fermentation with cedar spirals added to the tank. The cedar, saison yeast for primary fermentation and the brett for bottle conditioning aren't native ingredients. I get your point, but I just wanted to clarify that El Cedro isn't a native beer with any sense of place or terroir.

El Cedro was great with Stanley's pizza. Paired w sausage and red chiles, it was perfect. I don't think I would drink it as a stand alone though.

I was going to do that. I went over early and they had Buddah's, so I figured I'd just pick it up on the way out. When I was leaving, it was all gone. :slight_frown:

I usually will purchase beer first when I arrive and have them hold it till I leave. They've been happy to do so.

I was out there on Saturday as well and just wanted to give a few tips to fellow BA's who want to visit:
    • Show up early. The brewery opens at 1:00pm but Stanleys pizza opens at 12:30.
    • Grab a pizza before beer tasting. Seriously. We waited an hour for our pie (which was delicious) after ordering around 2pm.
    • Grab a glass from inside and then hit the tasting tent outside first. That's where they had funk metal, RU-55, bonnie, and weasel for sampling.
    • Have a DD. They give pretty heavy handed samples.

Hell yeah on the heavy samples, I'm not complaining though.
