Central Waters 5 year barrel aged barleywine. This series is the best barreled barleywine bargain around.

Here again are the huge notes bourbon soaked caramel and butterscotch that I love so much about CW barleywines. No better unapologetically brazen, all-American barrel aged barleywines around regardless of price as far as I'm concerened. Extended aging adds extra richness and baker's chocolate while the hop presence is diminished. Glorious. It's been too long since I've had the 4 to compare accurately but I think the aroma is pretty similar. I think I taste more wood and baker's chocolate here. I'm loving this but I believe I slightly prefer the 4 year. The carbonation is gentle while the body is full and lightly sticky.

I think I'm driving my school bus to Wisconsin next year to stock up.

Yeah, that was crazy. I didn't buy any as I was assuming it would be around for a while. I feel like it might come back up soon - I have seen that before.

This reminds me of ABC's Wide World of Sports Jim McKay's famous quote from yesteryear; "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat"![IMG]

51st new barleywine of 2023. Central Waters Barleywine Ale aged for 4 years in bourbon barrels. Very excited to dive into this one! Poured at fridge temp. Pours a very dark brown with minimal head. The nose is exceptional. Huge notes of toffee, bourbon, figs, molasses, and some honey.

The taste is VERY barrel forward. Wow - it's not a surprise that this spent so long in barrels. Bourbon, toffee, plums, honey, slightly alcoholic, oak, leather, very slight hop bitterness, and a bit of pecan pie. Lovely.

Mouthfeel is chewy with a boozy aftertaste. Lovely overall.

Nice! It would be amazing (and painful) to do a side-by-side of the entire series. Sounds like a barleywine party to me! I just finished the four year and I have a five year to try next. I'll try to do it soon so I have some memory of what #4 tasted like.

I guess I should open the Iced version soon as well, I have some trepidations going into that one though... Loved your 4 year review, what a series!

You up for patience and virtue Friday?

Beerburg Brewing (Austin, TX) Sour Barley Wine - fruity and funky barleywine but a bit flat from the bottle. Would like to have it from draft.
