Yeah I figured retail was like $7.99 given Tavour was $11.99. Good to know their markup isn't too bad

I live in PA and for the most part I think Tavour prices are pretty good. Barrel aged Firestone is $14-$17 retail here that's just one example where I find the app cheaper than what I see locally.

Central Waters 2023 Iced Bourbon Barrel Barleywine 17% abv.

Well this one is not shy, abrasive almost, but in a really fun way. Sharp, biting caramel and intense chocolate up front give way to a hot finish of strong, woody vanilla and low rent cask strength whiskey. There are some subtleties around the edges, hints of raisin and charred nuts. Overall this is just too hot to love but I'm glad I tried it and I did enjoy it.

I'll join @DIM with a big barleywine! Anniversary Ale Year 3 from Lumberbeard. A big bourbon BA barleywine. Comes in at 16.8% ABV. Bottled in January.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours dark brown with a thin layer of head. The nose is booze, toffee, and bready malts. Not as complex as one might expect.

The taste is really boozy. Perhaps a bit too boozy. Kind of takes away some of the flavors I was hoping for in a good barleywine. It does calm down after a bit and some of the flavors emerge! Getting some honey, caramel, bourbon, bread, some vanilla, oak, and some brown sugar. Nice overall.

I look forward to opening my can soon. I think we had the same experience tonight. The Lumberbeard barleywine was a bit too hot as well. I think my favorite ABV is closer to 12% for a big barleywine.

Revisiting this collab b/w Boulevard and Firestone. I am liking this a lot more than when I first tried it. Smooth and nicely integrated.

    13.5% is a nice one
14% is nice if its great

15%+ Depends. They are usually way too sweet

Hmmmm I don't know man, I've loved plenty above 15% that weren't too hot or too sweet. Curious to hear what your thoughts are on Dystopias north of 20%:grimacing::skull:

I need to open my Lumberbeard soon.

Yeah, good point. Now that I think about some of my favorites, many are over 15%....I retract my previous statement :stuck_out_tongue:

Is this an ongoing brew or a one-off? I still see them in a local store and am wondering how they age. Went through a pack earlier this year and it was just OK.

    Cape May Anniversary Ale 12

I've posted this one before, but it's the only barleywine I have, aside from a few Bigfoots (Bigfeet?) I'm cellaring, the weather is perfect, tomorrow's my birthday, and I just don't give a damn.

I like this but don't love it. Kinda mild flavor leaning a bit too much toward a pale ale.

I am pretty sure it's a one-off, but I could be wrong. It appeared and disappeared pretty quickly here.

Thanks. Their website doesn't specify, because why bother I guess. Maybe I'll take a chance next time I'm beer shopping.

Not sure how this looked fresh, but it ain't pretty now. It's a murky, muddy brown with just a little short lived head. But, on to what matters and this absolutely has it where it counts. I get piles of sugary dates, brown sugar, smooth brown liquor, and caramel candies. Every element is homogeneous and smoothly incorporated into this majestic beer candy. The body is silky smooth and lightly sticky. Loving this!

It's a happy thirsty Thursday as @DIM Dan's box made it to my front porch today! Not wasting anytime, jumping into Jackie O's/Pelican collaboration Mother of All Bricks.

Nose is a lovely bouquet of dark fruits, vanilla, and bourbon.
Taste is fantastic as the malt base gives me some brown sugar and figs along with notes of vanilla and a light char from the barrel. Finishes with a nice taste of the barrel that balances this beast out nicely and leaves a trace of trailing warmth.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied and silky smooth.
Overall a fantastic tasting EBW, thank you Dan for the opportunity to try! Overall rating 4.55.

    Cheers!
    Tom
