What do they discuss that doesn't touch on any of those sublects? Sports? Often political, and many athletes/coaches bring religion in. Weather? Again, often both political and religious. I groups don't talk about money, how do they trade stock tips and real estate? Perhaps everybody on the planet should stop interacting and go find their personal Walden Pond.

I detect a distinct lack of effort to be awesome.

Yeah, I think these used to be the guidelines when talking to my grandma. Replace “successful” with “repressed” and that sounds about right. To each their own I suppose.

Well, if we can let the alcohol industry be free range, sure, we can take politics out of beer. If we can get religious groups to stop pressuring governments (Hi Utah!!!) on alcohol issues, sure we can take religion out of it.

I think it was a good call to quickly change the policy to a more nuanced approach.

I would think that the biggest beer stories in the US this year are related to Bud Light, Tilray and Anchor. All three have a political component to the story at the very least. In the case of the biggest story, divisive politics are intrinsic to the story. These are stories that resonate with people outside of BA (barring Tilray). Would BA want users to intentionally avoid mentioning these topics and go elsewhere for beer stories/discussions this impactful? For a site dedicated to beer, I think it would be a shame if so. It's unfortunate that this puts larger demands on the mod team, but the addition of any information on BA puts demands on the mod team. Maybe adding a "Moderator note: Please..." edit at the end of certain thread OPs with a warning to keep things civil, on-topic and considerate will help avoid some moderation action (rather than making a post about it at the end of a locked thread). It's probably naive to think that would help much though. Maybe it will a little.

I like the more nuanced approach. I’ve been on this site for a long time and the vast majority of my usage and enjoyment has been strictly related to straight up beer info, topics and conversations- reviewing/rating, WBAYDN, brewery updates, etc. But occasionally threads like the Bud Light/Ultra Right catch my attention so I click on and sometimes post. For the life of me I can’t understand why people who don’t want to get into politics would bother clicking on the thread. There are plenty of threads here that don’t catch my interest so I just avoid them, thus having no idea what’s been posted and discussed on them. Same goes for people going on a “favorite IPA” thread only to complain that we’ve had these threads before.

I've tried this a few times in the past and it wasn't well received. People in the thread appeared to feel I was being patronizing and/or condescending. Didn't matter how good natured I was about the reminder. I'd be willing to give it another try, but frankly, I'm not optimistic about the results.

As Todd pointed out, it's simply not possible to come up with a plan or policy that will satisfy everyone. I think the compromise he came up with is probably the best that can be put into place.

Well, remember that dude who lived out there was anti-slavery and anti-Mexican War and refused to pay his taxes because of them. Wound up in jail (for a night or so IIRC). And Ol' Henry wrote A Plea for Captain John Brown (yeah, that John Brown) about a month before Brown was hanged. So, not really apolitical.

OTOH, his isolation out at the pond wasn't too tough to take, it was only a short walk down the railroad tracks which bordered the pond into town and he made the trip several times a week to eat dinner at Mom's. (And his sister and mother brought food out to the cabin, sometimes, too. "Oh, boy - fresh baked cookies? For me?")

I’m going to take “no overt politics” to mean no mention of *iden, *rump or other politicians.

I’m one of those who likes the heated BA threads, and finds small talk excruciating.

Wanna talk about the weather? “You worried about global warming?” Wanna talk Monday Night Football? “Whaddaya think about that Rodgers character?”

Hopefully everyone can remember that political opinion is not fact, and no opinion is "wrong". It may be misguided or uninformed, it may be biased by the news you ingest, but it's your belief. Also good to avoid is presuming that everyone in the opposite party believes the same exact things. There have been some dastardly things said and done on both sides of the aisle, and both sides are to blame. Let's talk/share beer!!!!!!

To me there is a huge difference between mature, reasoned discussion of politics and religion and some of the insulting cr@p that was being posted in one of the recent threads about “far right beer”. I reject the argument that is frequently posted, along the lines of “ if you don’t like it then don’t read it”… as if some of the comments are posted in red text so that I know not to bother reading it. Ever notice the paucity of “likes” pegged to some of the comments where members are going back and forth with each other, wasting electrons in a pointless effort to change anyone’s mind? You wanna dicker with another member? Take it off line in private messages and spare the rest of us.
