Is that because of the quality of the beer or the character of the location?

That’s why I used the qualifier “all else being equal”—your lousy sound guy at a live venue = dirty tap lines at a brewery. But assuming the same level of skill and care is given to both modes of delivery (in both beer and music), the draft/live delivery offers something more “real” than its canned/recorded counterpart.

As for your original question—I’ve never had the opportunity to try some of my favorite Belgian beers at the source, but in my mind I can’t imagine how they wouldn’t be somehow better than what we get out of bottles that have been sitting on shelves for months. I don’t even know if you can get beer on tap at Brouwerij Westvleteren, but if so, that would be a personal holy grail for me.

Eh, some bands make great albums, but aren't particularly good live acts.

I think the intricacies run in styles. You can have a good sound guy who doesn't understand hip hop and so has the bass way of point and you can't hear the vocals, same way you could have someone who keeps a clean tap setup but doesn't understand cask and serves it too cold, too old, whatever.

I think your analogy is a good one though. Assuming the performer and the venue are on their game, who wouldn't take live over recorded?
    McIlhenny now I suppose?

If so, they are probably relying too much on studio trickery and editing and not enough on musicianship.

Every Irishman I’ve ever met says that the Guinness in Ireland is the “mother’s milk” and the greatest thing you’ve ever tasted. I can see where freshness would make a difference in a low gravity beer, but I wonder how much difference does a month or two make in a pasteurized stout that’s shipped refrigerated? The roasty, bitter flavors that dominate Guinness don’t fade like hop aroma does.

Ron Pattinson, whose opinion I respect more than anyone this side of JessKidden; says that the no longer available bottle conditioned Guinness was one of his all time favorites, so maybe the superiority of Irish Guinness was true in the past when I did most of my time in Irish pubs?

I haven't run into a Nordic Raw Ale yet, but will report back when I do. Looks like some travel might be required.

I’m having a hard time with this because It’s hard for me to clearly find an example where I had a beer fresh from a keg at a pub/restaurant and also fresh at the brewery. One thing I could add about brewery beer drinking, is when some breweries have that wonderful aroma in their taproom of the fresh malts and hops that I’m sure play a positive sensory influence into the beer a person is consuming.

I doubt you will be able to purchase draft beer but you can obtain bottles from their café: In De Verde.

“Right across the Donkerstraat from the monastery, there is a cafe called In De Vrede, which is owned by the Sint-Sixtus Abbey. This cafe is the only authorized reseller of Trappist Westvleteren in the world! The primary way to purchase the Trappist Beer here is by the bottle in the cafe, but there is also a small shop at the entrance to the cafe which at time also does sell beer by the bottle or in special collector’s sets for take-away. Due to the limited production of the beers and increasing popularity, and need to keep enough on stock for the cafe, there were no individual bottle sales for take-away available in the store the past few times I visited, however was able to purchase the collector’s sets, which contain 4 beers – 2 blonde (green-cap), 1 8 (blue-cap) and 1 12 (yellow-cap) – along with a Trappist Westvleteren glass and a collector’s box.”

Bottled may be ‘better’ than via draft due to the bottle conditioning aspect.

    Cheers!

I have to agree with unluckyspiderperson about enjoying Pliny at the Santa Rosa location, and have to add being at Jester King in spring or fall enjoying their farmhouse ales.

    My short answer is Treehouse.

My analogy is takeout food as apposed to eating in a restaurants dinning room.
You don't get to appreciate the ambiance if you do takeout, assuming the place is nice. No smell of fresh baked bread, no service or opportunity to interact with the owner/chef.
That Fettuccine Alfredo you took home may now be used as spackle.

A brewery with a scenic view, attentive servers and staff can make one not care if that draft they are drinking is a little older than usual.

    Cheers.

I see this thread is developing into a "favorite brewery" thread -- not necessarily what I think was intended (at least not in my first inception in the other thread). That is:

Classic beers enjoyed at their origin location. @AlcahueteJ was referring to Pilsner Urquell unfiltered enjoyed at the brewery prompted him to hope to try Augustiner from the cask in Munich and Schlenkerla, likewise served, in Bamberg.

I'll add another (I'd forgotten), Salvator at the Salvator Keller in Munich -- quite nice.

And yes, many of these experiences may be more emotional and nostalgic than others, but I think my key original idea was "classic" beers. Of course, everyone has their own definition of that term...

Sorry @unlikelyspiderperson -- probably stole your thunder.

This might be true, but it’s hard to imagine anything that would be better than W12 flowing freely from the keg into my chalice right there at the abbey.
