It's been a while. Couldn't resist a barleywine single at Jungle Jim's in Cincinnati last month while stocking up on Oktoberfest beers.

    West Side Barleywine

12oz canned 12/20/22 poured into a teku glass at fridge temp 11% ABV 67 IBU per can. The beer pours opaque medium orange/amber with khaki colored head. The head recedes to a thin ring and uneven layer of varied bubbles. Streaks of lacing follow the beer down the glass. The aroma is mild with slightly sweet malt, wet cardboard and fading piney hops. The taste is semisweet caramel malt with dark brown sugar, slight cardboard and pine. Moderate bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with just less that average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. No alcohol notes in the aroma or taste. Overall, good. Maybe this one is better fresh or at least refrigerated. Purchased warm last month.

Can't win them all folks. Cheers!

2022. You are in for a pleasant experience. Please share your thoughts. I have more details in my hand journal, unfortunately the backlog for posting to BA is at about 100. I hope to get back on track by January. We shall see.

Revolution Maple Jacket (English Barleywine aged in maple syrup bourbon barrels for a year and finished with maple syrup). Has that classic Straight Jacket character with an extra dose of maple sweetness. Werther's Originals, maple candy, caramel, bread pudding, pumpernickel bread, peach reduction, boxed raisin, fig, maple syrup, some molasses, nice vanilla, bourbon spirit, drying charred oak. The oak barrels somewhat temper the sweetness, but there's no question this is sweeter than it's regular counterpart. I happen to like Straight Jacket and maple syrup, so I'm not disappointed, but I can see why this one is polarizing. A delicious take on SJ imho.

2022 Decorating Pieces of Time from Jackie O's. Aged in bourbon for 13 months. 12.7% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp, but allowed to warm for a solid 10 minutes before tasting. Pours a nice murky reddish brown. The nose is fantastic. Rich toffee comes through first. Beautiful bourbon and vanilla come next. Some prunes and maybe apricots, along with a nice hint of marmalade. Lovely.

The taste is a toffee bomb, and I love it. Truly comes across as chewy toffee candy soaked in bourbon. Vanilla, slight maple, graham cracker, malts, slight brown sugar, and some nice dark fruit. Love this one a lot.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate alcohol heat. Definitely doesn't taste like 12.7%

Irish Walker from Old Hickory tonight courtesy of @CarolinaCardinals Thanks Tom!

There is an interesting combination of flavors at work here and I'm diggin' it. Lots of sweet toffee up front that is quickly joined by perfumed, potpourri like fruit notes of spiced oranges and cherries. The finish adds light toasty nuts and hints of baker's chocolate. Dry overall, goes down very easy.

    Bottled December of 2020.

Having a small pour of Xyauyu Fume tonight. The unbelievably generous @FBarber sent this to me some time ago. Thank you again for that amazing box, go Phils! Looking to send you some Ralphiuses your way next release...

The presentation here is gorgeous. The bottle with a minimalist grey label comes packed securely in a sturdy black wooden box. Since the beer is still it is sealed with a cork like a bottle of wine. The package includes an extra cap for resealing since this bottle is meant to be enjoyed over time. Looking forward to revisiting this often in the cooler months.

Based on my experience with regular Xyauyu and what aging it in cedar kioke barrels did, I have a very clear idea in my mind's mouth what this will taste like. I'm sure the Scotch barrels will work extremely well.

Oh yeah, this is what I hoped it would be. Many of the sweet elements from the base beer shine through. I get caramel, marshmallow, vinous fruit, sugary crackers and more. As some of the sweetness subsides, a subtle, salty soy emerges. There is smokey wood at the finish and the ending exhale is almost pure smoke. Just a phenomenal beer experience, thank you so much Frank.

Here's my first time trying what seems to be a really popular Barleywine here. I'ts not what i expected and not in a bad way it's super thick and moderately sweet like molasses and figs. A little smoke and booze...but not strong at all..which was what I expected..It's very easy drinking and really unique. top shelf

SJ is just the gold standard for barrel aged English barleywine. Sure, there's some better ones, but it's just the textbook definition of what you want in the style. However, If you can ever try VSOJ, don't think twice

Enjoying another nice Barleywine from Town, this one aged in Whiskey barrels. A few notes:

Nose has notes of a huge dark fruit malt base with a touch of caramel.
Taste is very nice as the large malt base gives us notes of caramel, toffee, and dark fruit. Barrel brings a touch of vanilla. Finishes nicely balanced as the barrel rounds out the malt base very nicely. Mouthfeel is full bodied and deliciously smooth. Overall i am very impressed with Town's barrel program. Will definitely look for them the next time up in Asheville! Rated 4.43.
    Cheers!
    Tom
