Just a follow up, picked up a can packaged in late may of this year so they're keeping it in the pipeline

LOL! I may take you up on your offer. The wife and I both just recently retired and we've been doing more cross country traveling. I always try to include a couple of beer related stops (last time it was Bells, Founder's and Southern Grist), based on our trip itinerary. This upcoming year the itinerary is expected to include stops at Perennial, Prairie and Toppling Goliath.

I know it's a long shot, but if it happens to work out, I'll bring out some West Coast/North Coast goodies.

Hopefully the marketing folks at Founders will wise up and not defile the CBS label like they did to their Breakfast Stout label which is now a blind, anemic shadow of its former self.

One of the first things you see on this link:

    RateBeer Rating:
    100

Looking a little closer, overall score on BA is 4.64 on RB it's 4.33
Ratings on BA are 6762 and reviews are at 1627
Ratings on RB are 2196 and reviews are at 1531

Of the 15 most recent on RB, 13 are from outside of the US (not relevant, just interesting) and only 10 ratings on the page are from 2023.
Of the 20 most recent on BA, all 20 are from 2023.

Thinking Founders should be showing us a bit more love

Is this what they mean by "questionable business practices"? Even the Wine Advocate magazine ratings ubiquitously posted in the liquor store never hit 100.

They already did when they took away the mountie. I personally don't care if they put a picture of a turd on the label. I know the quality of what's inside and that's good enough to earn a case minimum purchase from me (if it's available in that volume, which is still up in the air).

Yep. I'm sure they aren't doing anything different beer-wise. It's just that those iconic orig pre-change labels are what make it identifiable to me. I hope I can get my hands on some when it gets released!

I saw this beer today at Wegman's. They had some Headless Gourdsman for a while. I thought they would get more in stock but now it's all gone. But I don't see this one on their release calendar. Has anyone tried this before?

I figured something like this would be released as a winter beer.

This looks like a Hardywood Gingerbread barleywine that's not a freaking exclusive I have to buy other beers to get... Instabuy if I see it.

So strange that these beers (Headless Gourdsman and Ginger, Spice, Barreled, and Nice) are no where to be found on there website; not a single mention.

Has anyone caught onto this wording from the link in the OP?

.....that has aged in bourbon barrels with maple syrup.

CBS has always been aged in empty third-use bourbon barrels in which maple syrup was aged, but this wording sounds like maple syrup is now added to the barrel at the time of filling for aging. Awkward wording or a change in their procedure? If it's a procedural change, will the beer be different?

Sounds like precise wording describing a change in process.

Yes, if they're adding maple syrup I'd expect it'll be sweeter and more mapley. Some people will like it more I'm sure.

Good spot. Here is the 2019 label side by side with the 2023 label for comparison. 2019 on the left.

I'd have some concern that the maple syrup will restart fermentation which would cause the maple flavor to mostly disappear as the yeast consumes the sugar. It would also increase the ABV so that the beer going into the barrels would have to be brewed to an ABV that's 1-2 percentage points lower than the old procedure, so this process change could be changing the final beer a bit. Founders always seems to know what they're doing when it comes to their barrel program. We'll know in a couple months.

I would think they'd use Potassium Sorbate, once fermentation is complete, to prevent additional fermentation of the maple syrup. Otherwise, I think, to your point, you'd lose that maple flavor and the simple sugar fermentation would thin out the body of the beer.

I can only talk in my market, so your mileage may vary. I didn’t see CBS shelf turd here.

However Willettized is a force at a high level of taste and price point. Hopefully we’ll see Willettized again this year. I’ll certainly buy CBS, but I’ll also buy Willettized and other stouts in that space. Competition is good.
