Bringing beer over the border to Canada

    I cross back and forth between Québec on a regular basis. The official limit is 8.5 liters per adult which is what? a case of 12oz cans. I always tell the border agent that I have ‘a cooler of beer’ and they wave me right through. Their only concern appears to be that it’s for personal consumption. Nobody’s ever bothered to step outside to look (except once, crossing back into the states) but I agree that it would be a horrible idea to lie.

    fwiw every province has different calculations for how much they 'markup' the beer, if they make you pay. actual Federal duty is super low, and on top of that would be GST/PST/HST tax etc depending on province. the provincial markup in BC for example, sucks and is very expensive. that said 9/10 times they don't care so paying balances out over time. I've never heard of an American having problems visiting if they say it's for friends.
