The pour is a clear, brownish-orange color; rather dark copper color in the glass; medium carbonation density with very slow rising tiny bubble; thick, spongy off-white head; thick sticky rings of globs of foam coat the glass. Outstanding aroma; sweet caramel with notes of orange and rye. Big malt flavor tinged with rye whiskey; caramel and light brown sugar; balanced rye spiciness; delicate sense of phenols. Heavy, sticky body; light and bright boozy heat.

A well-crafted barrel-aged barleywine that nicely balances the big, sweet malt base beer with the zesty zing of rye barrel aging.

Southern Yankee Brewing (Houston, TX) Grand Cru ‘22 American barleywine - intoxicating smell with a booziness that somewhat overwhelmed the expected sweetness of the beer. Still a pleasant treat.

They did that (plus fruit). If they re-release their Old Fashioned Holiday Ale, you should give it a shot. I’m in the opposite camp - this beer used to be weaker, and I would like to see that version return.

Bristol's Old No. 23 Barley Wine (yes, 2 words per the label @zid ) another one of a great selection of beers from @beergoot

This was added to the database in 2002. Aside from Bigfoot, this has to be in the running for one of oldest American barleywines in continuous production right? Third Coast also comes to mind but I can't think of any others.

This is lovely, bottled a little over a year ago. Not overly sweet up front, lots of shortbread cookies along with some dried apple and just a little caramel. The finish dries out with strong, potpourri like bitterness and a hint anise. Good stuff, thanks Dave!

this is basically a barleywine and hot damn is it good. need to track down another because this one should age quite well. nice bourbon barrel presence along with toffee, caramel, figs, other lighter dark fruits. thicker mouthfeel. really enjoyed this one.

this is Castaway bourbon barrel aged barleywine, from Old Stove Brewing in Seattle, Washington. 2021 vintage. This is a 13.0% beer that I received as part of NBS BIF#17 from the illustrious @snaotheus in his best attempt to bury me with big boozy beers from the Pacific Northwest. Im still digging out my friend!

    onto my review:
Sampling a cellar temp 2021 vintage , 22 oz waxed bottle and pouring into my trusty snifter. The beer pours a very deep mahogany color and has some lighter ruby highlights when I hold to a light source.
A dense creamy beige khaki colored head of just under 1 cm foams up on the pour. This foam fades to a very sturdy, and clingy edge layer. I get pretty dense lattice when I swirl the glass or take a sip. This beer looks nice and the dense head with 13% ABV is pretty impressive to me.
Aroma is rich and malty, sweet with out cloying. I get brown sugar and candied pears, with some werthers toffee and a decent amount of bourbon. No fusol booze, or any hop presence.
First sip reveals a medium body and smooth, fairly silky texture. Carbonation is very fine and soft on my palate. Does provide some coating on my lips and palate on each sip.
Flavor is very similar to the nose, with toffee and light fruity notes again pears are what I pick up. Bourbon sweetness and a little dry wooden barrel hint. There is some black pepper bite on the finish, which clues me in to the warming that occurs after the swallow. No hop character that I can detect.
This is a tasty barleywine that features some of the best qualities of the style but isnt overly aggressive with any of them.
Quite the sipper that I will spend the rest of my evening enjoying. Very glad to have tried this one!

Dystopias from Free Will. Comes in at 20.1% ABV!

Poured from a sample sent by @sulldaddy . Pours a very dark brown with zero head (as expected). The nose is intense. Prunes, plums, sherry, some alcohol, and raisins. The taste is insane. Molasses, prunes, figs, raisins, booze, slight chocolate, sherry, port. A mild sweetness and a sharp bite come through. Wow. This is really a wonderful experience. Something comparable would be Don from HotD, but this blows that away. Definitely some heat as it goes down. Amazing!

Look at me Dan (@DIM ), I'm trying this!

Nice Tim! I wish Free Will would share what the 6 different barrels in the blend are, but regardless I think it's a gem. I just love the idea of still, strong barleywine meant to be enjoyed in small measures over an extended period of time. I think I have four different bottles open right now.

Looking forward to hearing from @sulldaddy about this one.

Enjoying a barleywine from Phantom Canyon aged 3 months in Elijah Craig 14 year barrels. Thanks @beergoot !

I get lots of charred toffee and brown sugar plus hints of raisin, candied nuts, and vanilla. The barrel character is surprisingly strong for only 3 months of aging, adding a nice layer of booze and an oaky tingle. Good stuff!

Pours a deep, clear honey amber color before the yeast sediment enters the mix; dark amber in the glass; thin head initially that recedes to a light ring encircling the inside of the glass. Huge caramel and toffee aroma; some indeterminate earthy esters; leather. Rich malt flavor with a boozy undercurrent; caramel and toffee; figs; a kind of peppery spiciness in the background. Heavy body; thick and sticky on the palate; dense residual sugars.

There's no indication of barrel aging on the bottle label, yet my palate gets a sense of some sort of whisky / whiskey barrel aging. Ah, but wait! The web site indicates the possibility of whisky barrel aging but not necessarily for this edition. Regardless, this is one heck of a big, classic, English style barley wine. Rich, luxurious, flavorful, and a fine sipper.

4th D “Qu’ils Managment de la brioche” Let them eat cake - Kuhnhenn

That’s a lotta name right there. And this Old Ale pulls it off. Bottle date is 2022.

Murky dark brown pour is essentially black in the glass, with a brief thin, almond white head of fine bubbles. Each sip leaves a dense film, although no legs, on the glass and fine spots of lace.

Rich plumb pudding, with dried fig and a mild sensation of charred marshmallow. The roasted malt and coffee come into focus quickly, while vanilla, bourbon, light oak, and dark roasted chocolate follow in a progression as it warms. Mind you it’s just shy of 50° and cooling, so “warmth” is a misnomer here.

Flavors follow, with bourbon and charred malt leading the way. Plumb pudding, fig, and vanilla vie for second place. Dark roasted coffee is quickly behind. All sweet, with bitter overtones of dark chocolate. Vanilla comes back in the strong and lingering finish, where toffee and oak are added toThe mix.

Dense body with a smooth oily texture and surprisingly little residual sugar on the lips. Alcohol is pleasantly strong, with mild warmth. Carbonation adds a fine tingling sensation.

Another fine example of what Kuhnhenn is producing north of Detroit. While I’m enjoying this on one of the remaining spectacular outside days of Autumn 2023, I’m filled with memories of my grandfather and images of bulky red leather chairs in a room surrounded by books. It can’t last long, but it can be savored while it lasts!

Huge shoutout to @sulldaddy for this one! Fourteen Fourty from Kettlehead Brewing in New Hampshire. Single malt barleywine aged in 15 year old Widow Jane bourbon barrels. ABV comes in at 11.9%

Poured at fridge temp. Pours very dark brown with a tiny and fleeting layer of off-white head. The nose is insane. Rich toffee, bourbon, vanilla, raisin, prunes, and a nice woody note.

The taste is equally as amazing. Burnt toffee, slight tobacco, vanilla, oak, bourbon-soaked raisins, maraschino cherries, booze, and a slight acidic note. Definitely a moderate bitterness on the taste that wasn't apparent on the nose. Very tasty!

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a slightly alcoholic and toffee aftertaste.

Nah - they unsurprisingly list it as a Scotch ale. It would be very weird if they ever listed it as anything different.

Out in the San Diego area for work, Oceanside specifically. Stone has a taproom.

Drinking a glass of Double Bastard Bigger Longer Uncut. This is the version that is 13%abv and Scotch barrel aged. Menu lists it as "vintage", not sure what year.

Big oak and smokey aroma on top of the caramel and toasty malt flavors. Bitter, and a touch boozy.
