Early out from work today. Wahoo!

    Altstadt Okt Oktoberfest Marzen
    5.9% ABV
@DavyJonesXXX this is outstanding. Bro, you did me a good turn with these Altstadt beers. This one is more unique among the Marzens I usually get. Drinks just like a stronger Vienna Lager. A liter of this would go down easy. Vaulted way up ratings in this style. Prost!!!

Yes, the good Lord knows I have plenty to be thankful for this Thanksgiving!

1 of my favorite Oktoberfests. Thought it drank true to style better than most domestics i sampled. Can't wait to see what you think of the Schwars. Cheers!

I have found that the Marzens tend to break out into two versions - a darker, sweeter one and a lighter, drier one. Both have their merits and I think most beer drinkers prefer one over the other. The darker, sweeter versions tend to be more complex but drink heavier to me. The lighter colored ones, like this or maybe a Ayinger, drink much lighter - lending themselves to drink in more quantity. I think the difference may be in the use and amounts of Pilsner or Vienna malts vs Caramel malts. At least, that's one man's opinion on them.

Iv noticed that to. Depending on the day will determine what I'm after. Definitely I'm sure it boils down to the hop n grain bill to.

Pretty bummed. In short, I’m new to San Diego and needed to find a new job. So I walked into a new liquor store and sold them on Raul curating the beer section and they were impressed. Two days of unpacking, setting up, and teaching everyone about craft beer i.e. don’t sell bad stuff (basically everything they had ordered), and get Pizza Port, Kern River, El Segundo, etc. in… oh, and that IPA’s should be cold… Well, I was just told that things aren’t going to work out. Good thing my parents left at 7 AM and drove down here from Orange County to watch Baby Raulita today. This AleSmith IPA doesn’t taste like 2013 either

That brewery would be on my list to visit soon if I lived close enough. Drinking those well crafted German style beers right at the source would be fantastic. Hope you get to do that soon.

Indulge me in a little personal story: I was 3 1/2 years old on November 22, 1963, probably too young to be expected to remember anything. But, I have a clear and distinct memory of hearing two neighbor ladies screaming and talking loudly outside. I looked out through the front screen door and saw them hugging and crying in the middle of the street. I didn't know why, but I remember feeling like I shouldn't be looking at their grief, so I traced my finger along the curvy aluminum trellis design on the storm door, and averted my eyes. I remember the curves and corroded pits on that door so well that I can see them now in my mind's eye.

Live Oak has a great rep. That would be a great visit. I've been to Austin only a couple of times but did not have enough free time to visit any breweries.

Back home after a trip into a totally crazy Publix grocery store, we only needed 2 items. Freak of Nature while enjoying the 68 degree, breezy temp.

Wynkoop Brewing Co. -- Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout
Foreign style stout with bull nuts (three balls per barrel)

    Revisited November 22nd, 2023

Pours a clear, medium-dark brown color, appears nearly black in the glass; opaque; excellent khaki hued head; dense and long-lasting; nice foam sheeting inside the glass. Pleasant stout aroma; roasted grains; caramel notes. Fantastic taste; malty with a bit of anise-like spiciness; roasted grain and charred grain husk flavors; bold note of bitterness; bitter chocolate. Medium-heavy body; good viscosity; mild dryness at the finish.

This unique stout has a lot going for it even without the addition of bull nuts. It exudes all the earmarks of a well-made foreign export stout -- roasted grains, bitter chocolate, and a nice touch of dryness. I can't say what the 'three balls per barrel' of this batch contributes to the beer other than the uniqueness of 'adjuncts', but as a lover of Rocky Mountain oysters in other formats, this zymurlogical interpretation is balls on fantastic!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

Original June 07th, 2017 scores and ratings:

    3.25 3.25 4.25 3.75 3.75; BA weighted overall score: 3.8; rDev: +4.4%

Ink black in a goblet; only head is a thin ring of foam around the edge of the glass. Standard roasted grain smell; mild bitter chocolate. Fine dark malt sweetness; nice combination of dark grain sweetness; dark pitted fruits like dates and figs; low-key hop bitterness.

Oyster. How does one describe that? Especially Rocky Mountain oysters?? Well, earthy isn't out of the question. Simply stated, this is an earthy, rich and tasty stout. Don't read anything into my statement. This is an excellent foreign-styled stout (with an intriguing mystery ingredient - three balls per barrel per the brewery's notes).

My suggestion - just try it. Damn fine...
