I know I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but I'll repeat myself...god-tier Straight Jacket this year.

The last few years, in my opinion, Deth's Tar and Ryeway have gained significant ground in the standard-bearer category*, but this year SJ is really strutting it's stuff; dark fruit, wood, mild caramel, and some cognac notes that I'm finding dangerously drinkable.

As always, take this with a grain of salt. #trashpalate

*I'm not really a Cafe Deth fan so I don't have much of an opinion there

Just stopping in from afar to exclaim that Deth’s Tar is absolutely insane this year. It’s always good, last year was a little bit of a dip imo. However, 2023 is making up for it and then some!

So, I was sipping a DB VSOD last night, and aside from realizing that it is damn delicious, I also had a revelation (at the start, not the end of the 18% beer): There is always a common “thread” (read: taste) that I get in literally every rev BA beer (whether stout or BW). I have the same experience with Jackie Os BA beers - always a common thread I can taste that identifies them immediately to me as being a JOs beer. I mean, it is always the first thing I taste, and I can usually get it on the nose as well (with Rev also).

After 6 years of drinking rev, and also 6 years of drinking JOs beers, it finally occurred to me that this must not just be some type of deja vu, but must be something endemic to the brewery itself (since the barrels always change). I’m going to guess it is the “house yeast”.

Anyone else know what I’m talking about? These are the only two breweries that I have experienced this with. And, just to be clear, I am not saying this is inherently a bad thing. My top beer last year was a JOs beer. This is just something very distinctive, and I’ve not seen anyone else mention it here or in JOs. But, this is something people mention for many other breweries - that many of the beers have a distinctive flavor that is consistent across beers.

I haven’t had enough Rev stouts to really weigh in, but the few Jackie O’s I’ve had definitely had a characteristic about them that was similar. Tree House is the same. It used to be their IPAs all had a similar profile (always attributed to the house yeast), but now they have 500 beers with different yeasts and malt bills, so it’s less prevalent. However, their stouts all still have that same backbone, where you instantly know what brewery it came from.

Revolution Deep wood series are the BA brews i miss the most. Had a Deth’s Tar yesterday it was outstanding. (To me best 4PK stout available) Great chocolate , roasted malts, and delicious barrel. I will choose Deth’s Tar over regular BCBS at almost half the cost.

I do not drink enough Jackie Os to help with this pressing matter. What I can say is I don’t believe it’s the house yeast. More likely to be similar approaches to recipe development and/or blending. Maybe a certain specialty malt both breweries know and trust. Two great breweries, sometimes great minds just think alike

Just to be clear, the flavor I get in JOs isn’t the same as the flavor I get in Rev. I was just trying to share that Rev is not alone in this taste for me. I get a “unique to the brewery” taste from more than one brewery. For each brewery, that flavor is pervasive across all their BA brews. Hence, the idea it is the “house yeast”. Otherwise, just not sure how it could be so pervasive across styles.

Voodoo also has a very distinct common thread. Personally I think it comes down to malt profile, particularly the roast levels, but it may also be where they source from and the type of barrels they prefer to use (quality, condition).
