I think 1 year is analogous to 10% abv, the odds that it is exactly 10 are nill. Some brewers go 1 place past the decimal point, some 2 places. Think I have a 15.41 downstairs. Shrug.

Yeah, but ABV claims are regulated by the government and they have a tolerance of 0.3% in either direction (or something along those lines). Something outside that range would be a violation.

All right now about this theory then, their beers are their babies. And you know how oddly precise parents of young children are about their age? Little Dimmy is 14 months and 2 weeks old today! Maybe that's it?:sunglasses:

And the 2 places past the decimal point is kinda silly.

I doubt there’s any kind of regulation for this. I would imagine most brewers would say “1 year” at 11+ months. I appreciate the ones that give you the month count. Sometimes you’ll see “8 months” for example, which doesn’t hinder my purchase desire in any way. I think the original Tweak was only aged 6 months, and yet had tons of barrel character

If that’s the case, and if most brewers are rounding, then they must not be very proud.

Personally, I could never handle the precise age of my kids. The number was always changing! But worse than that, I’m the type that needs a cheat sheet for their age (and even with my own age).

I have not had a bad beer from Edmund's Oast and they brew across a lot of styles. Have not tried Beastly yet but looking forward to a change of pace American Barleywine!
    Cheers Derek!

...well, since its a blend of barleywine and imperial stouts:

Blend of several vintages of double oaked barleywine and imperial stouts aged in a variety of bourbon barrels including Amalga Whiskey barrels for 1-1.5 years. Finished on Klatch Coffee, Vermont maple syrup and Madagascar vanilla beans.

Pour out like motor oil, dark, opaque brown; carbonation but little lasting head, light brown, patchy, and ring of foam encircling the inner circumference of the glass. Notes of coffee, dark chocolate, and wood char in the nose. The taste magnifies the qualities of the smell and adds notes of vanilla with a slight whiskey edge.; raisins; tobacco juice. Heavy body; dense residual sugar feel; coats the palate with an earthy stickiness.

The beer grows in complexity and depth as it warms up. It is rich and alluring in its appeal to the senses.

Haven’t been on the bw train for far too long. Getting back in the habit with my last bcbs barleywine in house.

Boozy candied orange on the nose. Taste is pretty amazing even though it’s still too cold. Gonna settle in with this for a couple hours. Cheers!

Lots of dried fruit vibes here, nectarines, dates, and raisins mostly with some apple and pear as well. Maybe even a little banana pudding in there. I also get plenty of toffee plus honey, woody whiskey, and light honey. It all comes together very nicely, thanks Dave! Very glad to have tried this.

On my second 5 oz pour of §ucaba and just gotta say WOW.

FW are masters at barrel aging stuff. The barrel presence in this is magnificient. Balances out all that sweetness stuff i hate in an expert fashion. Very little breweries hit the nail on the head with BA Barleywines like FW does for me.

    Shout out FW .

I needa run to grab some 2023 Parabola ASAP

Wax Wings knows their way around a barrel. I've always enjoyed the apple brandy barrel treatment to stouts and barleywines. Very jealous you got to try their stuff!

Gnosis Hermitage English Barleywine - Banana Walnut. This local brewery to me makes some great beer, especially stouts. I'm glad their first dive into barleywine was English, but I could do without the adjuncts. That being said, they do work well with the base beer. Caramel, burnt sugar, toffee, and raisin go nicely with the banana and some walnut to make a banana bread-like beer. Super sweet though. Some alcohol comes through to somewhat balance it, but this needs something else (perhaps a barrel) to balance it out.
They've released a few other adjuncted English barleywines since this one and they get favorable reviews. This is solid, but needs some work imho.

    onto my review:

sampling a 12 oz can poured into my snifter at cellar temp. Date stamp is 12/29/2022.
The beer pours a dark rich mahogany color into my glass. Only the lightest tints of light get through the glass.
A fizzy beige head of 1 cm foams up but fades to a thin edge layer quickly after the pour. The edging does stick around for most of the sampling.
Aroma is toffee, brown sugar, some bourbony/rye sweetness, a bit of dry wooden barrel, almost like a popsicle stick note. There are hints of fusol booze here too, but no hop notes that I can detect.
First sip reveals a fairly robust body and syrupy texture. Carbonation is fine and tingly, sticky coating on my palate after each sip. Swallow reveals a bit of warmth on the finish. Physical traits make this a sipping beer.
Flavor is similar to what the nose predicts with malt forward character. I get toffee, brown sugar and general malt sweetness. There is a rye/bourbon note that carries through for sure and I keep tasting maple syrup, even though I dont think thats an additive. I dont get any hop character on this beer. Booze is limited to warmth, with no peppery bite or spiciness.
A sweeter sipping beer that I am enjoying and very happy to have had the chance to drink tonight while watching Dallas vs Seattle.
    4.8 in the BA DB
