Van Hessler Brewing in Syracuse and Muddy River’s second location in Oneonta have both opened this past week.

Chase, the original head brewer at District 96 who left to join Drowned Lands, is now back at District 96.

I'm curious to see if they can pull this off, and it would definitely be nice to see them expand their portfolio. I'm also curious to see if Drowned Lands can keep up the quality with Chase gone. Their beer got noticeably better when he became their head brewer.

Their IG post stated "with Chase back, we will be increasing our portfolio with some exciting new Foeder and Farmhouse ales..."

Given that Drowned Lands is easily accessible upstate and D96 is not, selfishly, I hate this.

Right, but I meant more so the logistics of it. District is a smaller operation than DL. You can't do foeder aged stuff without... Well foeders. I don't recall seeing anything like that in their production area last time I was there.

They reportedly planned to lease space in Blauvelt above the Restaraunt Depot for production and a new taproom so maybe they have that hardware over there. Haven't seen anything in the news regarding approvals or an opening date though so I don't even know if those plans were realized or if they fell through.

Weird. That's news to me. They were supposed to open a second location in Piermont that also appears in the website you linked link. They even have a second Instagram account for it. It was supposed to open in July of last year, but I don't think anything ever happened.

    1) Big Ditch gonna open a location in Lockport. The Buffalo/Rochester brewery incest continues.

    2) OH is buying Young Lion in Canandaigua. On one hand I’m bummed, been going to YL since they opened and while the beers aren’t on OH’s level I’ve always enjoyed going there.

On the other hand…. OH drafts with that view? Brother sign me the fuck up.

Damn, I really enjoyed the beers that I had at YL when I was there over the summer.

Just about to post about YL selling to Other Half. I am bummed, as I like YL, beers and their crew. Also like the quieter breweries in general. Most of the time able to get a seat at the bar, and feel a little more personal touch then I get at OH FLX. That being said, we shall see. Did not know that OH contracted some of their brewing to YL. Hoping for the best.

Oh shit that Big Ditch spot in Lockport is going in an old two-story brick post office that looks immaculately maintained. Gonna be a seriously gorgeous taproom.

Agreed on the quieter spots. That said, when I’m at the lake there’s a lot of times it’ll be like 1p on a Wednesday and I wanna sit outside at a brewery and read a book but YL usually didn’t open until 4 where as OH is open at like 11a. So selfishly that benefits me.

I’ve beaten this drum before but would like to again emphatically recommend Google mapping “breweries near me” every once in a while even in areas you know super well.

Did this recently on a Suarez/Lasting Joy trip and found something called Jordan Homestead Brewing like 2-3 miles from Lasting Joy. It’s in a kind of barn basement for Greig Farm (100% worth a stop on its own) and apparently just opened like two weeks ago. Had a killer session IPA and a very nice saison, taproom is homey and the back area will be killer in nice weather.

Also if you have small kids they had a big wooden train table and setup and a kitchen toy thing and my daughter had a great time with both. Loved the goats out back too.

If you’re in that Suarez/Vosburgh/Lasting Joy/From the Ground area it’s more than worth making a very slight detour to Jordan Homestead.

The HV has soooooooo many of these farm breweries now. The opportunity cost to visit is low since it's right off of 9 and my son always loved visiting Greig for the aforementioned animals.

The most right I’ve ever been on anything in back in the mid-00s when it was announced that Dan was starting Suarez and Chief was starting Industrial Arts and I said if those two breweries are as successful as I assume, the HV is gonna become one of the best brewery hubs in the country.

And in 2023 here we are. A sparse, rural area in the upper HV now has five breweries in a five-mile radius. New places are opening all the time and they’re all successful and supported and I don’t even know what the ceiling on this shit is.

I biked the Erie Canal this past fall. Stooges in Lockport was my lunch stop on day one. If Big Ditch is open next time I go through, I may cut day one short and spend the night in Lockport.

I'm very interested in beer stops along the canal. I have dreams of riding north up to Syracuse and then over to Albany
