If I remember correctly, the last time it was made the label was different in regards to the apples used than the time before. The time before listed a "blend of 4(to 5?) different apple varieties" while the last time it was brewed, it listed less varieties and I think they may have been different.

Last apple ale flavor profile:"caramel apple pop" (or as you said, jolly rancher) -like flavor,
Time before:"rustic" unfiltered cider like character (my preference).

Is this a new beer? Also, given your handle I always chuckle when you post news; that is all.

Described as a Scotch Ale. I like it, but a fairly nondescript offering by NG standards. I hope the pitchforks and torches do not come out on this one. Scotches are pretty easy to like.

Tony I've had both but don't remember a difference between the two. What did I miss?

As you know the Blonde is my favorite beer of last year. I hope it makes it to the regular rotation.

Is this a mistake or has Fat Squirrel disappeared for the year?

Black Top replaced Fat Squirrel as year round. FS won't be back at least till 2014.

On a FB post NG wrote that the sales were just not there to keep Fat Squirrel year round. I am a little bummed, but alas I am part of the problem for not picking it up as often as I should.

I'll have to grab a single and give it a try. I love a nice Scotch Ale.

Winter warmer sounds great, can't wait to try it.

Did they ever announce what beer won the vote they had in August?

The Unplugged Apple Ale from 2009 has a more defined toasted malt character, and an apple character best described as apple cider in that it was rich apple character that wasn't as sweet as the 2011/2012 versions. The later versions have more apple skin / fresh apple juice and seem brighter and a bit sweeter, but lack that complexity of malt character. I am the oddball out in my local tasting group in my preference for the older vintage though.

I hear ya on the Hometown Blonde, was one of my most pleasant beer surprises of 2012 (aside from Jack's Abby).

    Cheers!

Black Top year round is a good thing. On another note, I wish NG would have affordably priced 12pks. Other breweries like SN that have 7.99 six packs, typically sell 12 pks for 12.99(at least in MN).
NG spotted cow twelvers are 15.99, which boggles my mind!

I was at the brewery last weekend and they still have TONS of Belgian Red sitting there.

The Thumbprint beers left at the brewery were Apple Ale and Winter Warmer.
