Edmund Fitzgerald by Great Lakes. I’ve been drinking this porter for 30 years. Still a favorite. Cheers.

Damn, I was recently at Workhorse Brewery (NYE party) and for some reason I missed this beer.

I can report that the Doppelbock they have on tap now is very good - excellent.

    Cheers!

This is really good! I found it at Wegmans in Collegeville. I have seen the Doppelbock around and I’m going to get it upon your recommendation! Cheers!:beers:

When it comes to porters, it's hard to beat Founders. Even after the sell-out, this beer remains solid and nearly perfect.

@Braunmeister_1943 Thanks for starting this one. I’m always on the lookout for decent Porters.

I agree that it's great, but for some reason that 6.5% ABV hits me like it's really twice that. Every time I've had it. No other beer has had that effect on me.

No pics, but I have both Bent Water Jolene and Idle Hands 34 porters in my beer fridge. Both are fantastic beers, and the Mrs has a particular fondness for Jolene. Unfortunately neither are year-round, but I can always grab Mayflower Porter if I need my fix (and I’ll never complain about that option).

Thanks you two for kicking this thread off right. I was fearful that the first porter on this thread would be some adjunct-loaded monstrosity. Happy to see real porters leading the charge.

Just read up on that nine pound porter. Sounds phenomenal. And Edmund Fitzgerald is the one brew that I wish got distributed to my area. I'm spoiled with great beer in New England, but Eddy Fitz is still one that I wish I could get. I've had around six in my life and all were exceptional. Salute!

When it comes to Porters, I’m a big fan of the Smoked ones, which is hard to find in my area. If I went out side of that range the GOAT would be “Ballast Point Victory at Sea Imperial Porter”. We use to get hem every now and then, but not any more. I miss my trips to San Diego cause I would always stock up.

I love Great Lakes, “Edmund Fitzgerald “! We get it here in SEPA and it’s quite reasonably priced, too! $11.99/ 6 pack of 12 oz bottles’

That’s an incredible thing. I may drink only that if I lived out there.

    Jack’s Abby Framinghammer

I’m old enough to remember when porters were a staple on every microbrewery’s tap list. This one, while not exactly from that era, is still a beer I haven’t had for ages — probably back when Jack was still in its original space and before I joined BeerAdvocate. This thread inspired me to review it now.

Framinghammer pours near black with two fingers of mocha-colored head. There’s an audible fizz to the beer, but the head still has decent retention and a creamy look to it. It leaves thick rings of lacing.

Chocolate, sugared coffee and deep roasty qualities show in the nose. The roast approaches umami without actually hitting it.

Almost bracing roastiness and fairly aggressive bitterness in the taste counteract the sweeter brown sugar and milk chocolate elements, with the bitterness lingering into the aftertaste.

It has a creamy, full bodied feel with zippy carbonation.

This one’s a winner. It tastes almost inky. The bitterness is also quite strong for a dark beer (or really any beer) these days. The carbonation is a bit heavy handed to my preference, but otherwise excellent all around. :beers:
