Go for an old reliable, or try something new?

When faced with the choice of buying a single beer from restaurant or retailer, do you usually

  1. 1) go for the familiar beer that you know you like

    15.7%
  2. 2) go for a new one if the style is a favorite, even if the brewer is unfamiliar

    41 vote(s)
    58.6%
  3. 3) go for the new one if the style is a favorite, AND IF the brewer is familiar

    22 vote(s)
    31.4%
  4. 4) buying a SINGLE beer? that is madness. Who does that?

I went with option one. I am a little bit past the stage where I feel like I need to try each and every new release. Having said that, I will still try new beers - especially if they are from a brewery that I know and trust. But that is the exception and not the rule. Too many times have I tried a new beer, only to come away either disgusted or otherwise unimpressed. About 90% of the time, I am sticking to my tried and true lineup.

Guess I'm not much of a gambler anymore.
If I'm buying more than one, I'm probably going to buy the known property and then something new. Had enough beers over the years to know that for every one that blows your mind, 3 will be somewhat disappointing.

I don't quite fit any category. I often buy singles from a close by store that breaks up any beers that are not wrapped, or in boxed sets of course.

I go for for tried-and-true favorites when a drinking situation is social, or important like the upcoming Super Bowl.

Sometimes I would try a newbie.

I pick #5; it all depends.

    Edit
I didn't vote so can someone please tell me how it turned out? Thanks in advance.

Pretty much why I stick with draft options when I'm out. I don't think I've bought a bottle of beer out in the past 12+ years.

I think the poll might be more telling if you split the "restaurant" aspect from the "retailer" aspect.

At a restaurant, choices are typically more limited so you might go with option 1 or 2 (i.e. might be forced to go with these options). At a retailer, you might go with any of the 4 options since your options are more broad.

I like your input despite not voting....Here are the results as of Saturday 3:10PM Pacific:
40 votes= try something new, even if you don't know the brewery
20 votes= try something new if you know the brewery
9 votes= go for the familiar favorite
6 votes= buying a single beer is madness

I was trying to keep it simple, plus the intent was to assume that you had similar choices regardless of restaurant v. retailer, i,.e. both offered familiar favorites, at least one new beer from unfamiliar brewers and at least one new beer from familiar brewers. Maybe that is not always the case, but if I listed every permutation of possible questions and options, you would still be reading the choices and most likely the votes would be minimal.

No, I get it. I answered with a restaurant in mind.
