Have you had a chance to try Founders Porter? Edmund Fitzgerald?

I do. I tried it once and found it too "inky" much like Russian River's Shadow of a Doubt Imperial Porter. If I could find a single somewhere I should probably give it another try.

If you get Thirsty Dog beers nearby, then try an Old Leghumper. A solid, approachable porter.

Never heard of it, is it readily available here in the states?

    Thanks for sharing the story.

We definitely have their beers here. A strong Polish contingent here. Cheers.

I believe so. If not I can mule beer and meet you there one spring day while my gnome is teaching cancer nurses. I’ve been near but never in Rheingeist so I’d like to visit while she works

Well it is available in my state.

I dropped by my local Retail Beer Distributor a few days ago and they had bottles on the shelf. I purchased a few of them.

    Cheers!

This has won gold multiple times at GABF - $3 for a single at Trader Joe's. I tend to prefer English porters (more sessionable, more yeast derived flavors, wonderful served on gravity), but I think this one, while not quite as good as the best examples available, is underappreciated. Full review here and in NBW #187 (4.17/5 rDev +4.8%).

I still have a few cans of this porter. It is not for everyday use, but it is solid if you are looking for a beer to wake you up and keep you warm like a cup of coffee.

Not quite a crosspost to the NBW thread. This one tastes like a not-so-good replica of the excellent Żywiec Porter. A sugary alcoholic drink. The only appreciation I have for this beer is that it is sold in singles.

    Ground Up - Trophy

Nice mellow roasted coffee and malt. The chocolate is well balanced. Light sweetness and mild bitterness. Warmth (about five minutes now) really lets the coffee open up, and lends a light char to the malt. Trophy brews some good stuff and their talent is on display with this example.

I’m enjoying it with a ripe, soft blue-cheese which brings out a little more sweetness in the Porter and might be adding a sharp edge to the cheese.

Probably not what Theodore Roosevelt would have enjoyed while collecting trophies from the wilds, but it’s a fine sipper for me on a cold afternoon while reading about Roosevelt’s brand of Naturalism.

    Slough Water - Burial

Puts the Robust in Porter. Enjoying it with a pungent Stilton on a cold and bright sunny afternoon. Lots of burnt malt and coffee in the aroma, that becomes quite mellow in the flavor.
