There is an appreciation thread which seems to have become coopted by some folks who seem to not be fans of the AAL beer style. I figured a more productive way for folks to ‘vent’ is to create a new thread specific to this topic.

Tell us why you are not fans of the AAL beer style. Is there really not a single brand of AAL beer that you can appreciate?

I will fess up that I am personally not a fan of the megabrewery (e.g., BMC) versions of AAL beers but I do enjoy AAL beers from other breweries with two examples being Reading Premium (brewed by Sly Fox) and Yuengling Lord Chesterfield.

    Cheers!

Please tell us more. What were the two brands you recently purchased? What do you think of those brands?

And thanks for re-posting that photo. It is quite a collection. When I was growing up my father's beer of choice was Piels Real Draft which he would purchase by the case of 16 ounce returnable bottles.

I can’t say I hate any beer style. The only time I drink AALs is if I’m out for Korean food, because usually all they have is something like Hite or OB (these are classified on here as European pale lagers, but I doubt there’s much difference). They are functional beverages for washing the food down, but if the focus of my beer drinking is to any degree more on the beer itself, and not merely as an accompaniment to the food, I prefer something else.

Just tagged you in the haul thread where I posted but these are the two, if others are interested...the two were as follows:

A very very well made local cream ale, 20% corn...I purchase this multiple times a year, just about perfect mouthfeel.

    Bonsaw Brewing - Silver Queen

The other is Tonewoods AAL...returned just a few weeks ago.

Because you have to drink them really cold and I like to drink beers at room temperature. When it comes to AAL's I guess I like the ones that dont taste like pee when they warm up. I know Natural Ice does but Im not sure which ones dont or maybe they all do IDK.

There are two reviews for this beer (yours being one) and I appreciate that both reviews seem to be reviewing the beer to style. When it comes to AAL beers this adherence 'to the rules' seems to be a rarity.

    Cheers to you!!

Nah - that looks to me like the C. Schmidt & Sons' version of that 16 oz. Reading Beer.... :grin:they bought the brand in 1976, when the brewery closed. Most sources show that the Reading Brewing Co's. original cans with the red rings, had an inverted triangle that said "16 Oz." at the top, and read "brewed with clear Blue Mountain water" at the base (not to be confused with the "sky blue water" once boasted by Hamm's).

I never saw so many top-opened beer cans in a collection. The convention in the hobby was to open them with a can opener (or other tool) on the bottom. Grandpa must not have been paying dues to the BCCA.

They're bland, unoriginal, boring, don't taste particularly 'good', and are generally owned by large, shitty conglomerates.

Yes, the Reading beer cans from the brewery in Reading, PA had red rings. I met up with a good friend when he donated an old 'original' can to the owner of a local brewery (Root Down Brewing) which he promptly placed on a shelf behind the bar. The can looked liked this:

Recently grabbed a single of Strohs to try and very much enjoyed it. Super clean and zero off flavors, even as it warmed it maintained a notable cleanliness for a macro made one, I believe it said brewed by Pabst somewhere on the can.

Do you know the deal with the new Stroh’s?Is there any relation to the old original one that you and others may have drank, or is it all just marketing? I grabbed said single I mentioned above because of the can I had just saw in this display.

The red ringed version of the label started at Reading and Schmidt continued it (don't know what happened to the label after it became a Heileman brand). The older Reading cans had gold rings. It's the missing info "16 Oz." & "brewed with clear Blue Mountain water" that ID's it as the original.
I don't think there's anything "new" about Stroh's (in the blue can), which Pabst has been marketing since they bought the brand in '99. It is, of course, no longer "fire-brewed" (kettle heated by a direct flame). Pabst created a couple of new/old Stroh's branded beers a few years back but I think they failed like so many other Pabst attempted revivals.

I purposefully used single quotes in my post, copied here: 'original'.

For some reason you chose to not include that portion of my post your reply!?!

    Cheers!

I like AALs on occasion, right now I have a couple Dos Equis and High Life’s in the fridge. There aren’t too many I dislike. Modelo and PBR are 2 popular ones that I’m not fond of.

I don’t hate all of them. Just Rolling Rock, Bud, PBR, and Molson. Modelo seems really skunky to me now so I won’t be purchasing it in the future. The rest of the AAL’s I don’t mind too much.
