That's how you get to rating practically a beer a day!

    Stone Delicious Double IPA
    [IMG]
    Appearance: Clear gold, good head.

    Smell: Musty, stanky and malts.

Taste: Moderate sweetness, cakey, plenty of malt backbone. Piney and citrusy bitterness hit next, very old school. Heavy feel.

Overall: From the mix 6 of Delicious brand from Stone, the double IPA hearkens back to the aughts with a big malt backbone and solid bitterness. Doesn't seem to hit the mark though—smells weird and feels too heavy. It's fine.

Dark yet clear mahogany color, clear brown pour, reddish looking in the glass; fat and dense carbonation; thick, frothy head, very light tan hue, sticky. Outstanding aroma; roasted grains with an earthy sweetness; caramel; very delicate smokiness. The flavor follows along the lines of the aroma; rich malt flavors; some light spiciness; brown sugar; quiet phenol notes in the background. Heavy body; smooth and lush mouthfeel; semi-sweet character.

This is a beautifully rich and robust beer, very malt forward yet balanced with a hint of smoke and some slight spiciness to round things out.

Moonlight Brewing Co. Reality Czech Pilsner Beer, 4.9% ABV; 4.78 overall Cheers @RaulMondesi for this beauty

Pours an effervescent gold with a thumb of ivory colored head. Fantastic head retention & lacing

S: Bready, grainy, hints of lemon, some perfumy hops once warmed up

T: Follows the beautiful nose, dry with soapy hop notes, some grassyness as well up front. Breadyness, limes & lemon, grassyness, plus dryness as this beer warms up. Finishes dry, crisp with lemongrass notes, plus some bready /grainy sweetness

MF: Medium body, crisp carbonation, great balance

Superb drinkability, totally nails the style. The only beers I had better in this style were some of the OGs over in Europe

Watching some Red Wing hockey, and getting into this Maggie’s Irish Red from Saugatuck Brewing, appearance as expected but unable to generate any head so that’s a bit disappointing, but nice sweet bready aroma and medium body with carmel malt, some cherry, and faint hops make this an enjoyable Irish red.

It's been a minute since I had anything from Saranac. This one is an old-fashioned brew in the sense of the bottle design, the fact that it is indeed in a bottle rather than a can, and the smell and the taste are very much like the beers tasted 20+ years ago — sweet brown sugar, malt, no hop bitterness. It brings back memories of numerous similar-tasting Saranac beers that were around both on draft and in bottles all over the place back then.

Good afternoon, fellow beer enthusiasts! As Eastern Idaho is facing a blizzard, I decided to do some beer reviews today. I started with KBS Spicy Chocolate, but unfortunately, I found the chilis to be bland and the chocolate boring. The chilis had a dusty, earthy green jalapeno flavor, while the chocolate tasted cheap and dark. The beer could have had more flavor packed into the bottle. Nonetheless, that is my opinion. I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend. -J-

    Oxbow field beer
...has a very pale appearance that comes off as an odd green hue
..around a medium body with the same for carbonation
...aroma is some herbs, very earthy with lemon peel and juice
..taste doesn't stray too far from the aroma. Spice is there and tastes like basil and oregano which is probably where the dry earthiness is coming from.
Lemon is mild but definitely noticeable.
...overall its good, interesting but doesn't beg to be repeated [IMG]

OK, Weekenders, it took me quite a while to be ready to share this next one. Let's get right to it.

Bourbon County Brand Angel's Envy - 12 months aged in Angel's Envy Kentucky straight bourbon barrels, followed by 12 months aged in (unidentified) port wine barrels (15.5% ABV)

Before I go a single step further, a massive thank you to @JayORear who sent this to me simply on the basis that I didn't have it available to me, and he thought I might appreciate the opportunity to try it. Unbelievably generous, as always. Someday soon I'll have to make it back to Hill Farmstead, The Alchemist, and Barreled Souls so I can stop sending you Tree House.

I wrote plenty in my review, so I'll just get to the summary here.

This is a great beer, but it's not an all time beer. In my review, I went to a sports (specifically, baseball) analogy: this beer might be worthy of the Hall of Fame, but I don't think it's getting in on the first ballot.

First off, the aroma is astoundingly good. It's simply fantastic. I'm questioning if I did it a disservice by giving it a 4.75.

The mouthfeel is similarly phenomenal. There's a touch of fizz if you take a large sip and then chew on it, and it could use a bit more thickness for the style, but otherwise it's purely a joy to sip, sit, savor, and chew. A wine breath brings no harshness. It's too damn easy to drink fast, frankly, given the sky high ABV.

But ... how about flavor, and its place in the pantheon of beers?

There's very little to complain about with the flavor, but very little is not the same thing as none. Perhaps it's the choice of whiskey itself, or perhaps the balance of the time spent in the barrels, but there's a neutral, ethyl alcohol, corn-like boozy effervescence that detracts just a little bit from the overall experience (for me; for my partner - the whiskey drinker - this was the biggest detriment, and took a beer that she would otherwise have in the 4.5-4.75 range down to 4.00 or even lower).

It could serve to be a bit more richly complex, as well.

But ... well, that's nitpicking, really, because the flavor is pretty damn fantastic.

The port wine aging is an excellent touch, as it's far less sharp than a stout aged in red wine barrels tends to come across. Still, the overall influence is similar to a younger port: less rich, less deep, a little bit hotter than in a 30+ aged port. I have to wonder if maybe 18 months in bourbon, followed by 6-12 months in port, might have resulted in a deeper, sweeter profile (and they don't specify the port, so it's difficult to know the influence for certain).

My tasting notes are rather comprehensive, so I'll leave it here and say: go read the review. :stuck_out_tongue:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1146/666470/?ba=Roguer#lists
    4.62 / +3.8%

In closing, I'll restate the conclusion from my review:

It's nearly impossible to recapture the magic of the first time you have a beer like OG BCBS. Maybe Bourbon County wasn't your intro to that field; perhaps it was BA Narwhal, BA Ten-Fidy, or a local contender. Regardless of your own personal inroad, that first time you have a masterful BA imperial stout (preferably sans adjuncts, for this thought experiment), it completely changes what you think is possible with a beer, stouts in particular. Once you've had many such beers, it's exceedingly rare for another one to come along that gives you that same magical feeling of awe blended with naivete ...

... and, well, this one isn't quite in that category, either, but if not, it's damn close. When I think of the absolute best-of-the-best BBA imperial stouts I've had, this one doesn't make the list, but it's certainly not far behind.

    Thanks, Jay! Cheers, Weekenders!

Back again. I have Wycinanki, a Piwo Grodiskie from Tree House. I have never had a Grodiskie, despite being 15/16ths Polish. Figured I owe to my ancestors to dig in, despite not being a fan of smoked beers.
As usual, amazing, topical can artwork from TH.

Poured from a 16-oz can stamped “WINTER 2024”. It was purchased cold at the Charlton location yesterday and kept cold. Poured to a Stang at 42 degrees F.
This has a very clear light gold body with an enormous puffy ultra-white head. Carbonation is visible and the rising bubbles are more populous than most pilsners.
The aroma is bready and earthy.
The taste is quite smokey but biscuit and some hop sense pokes through.
The body is light. Despite the rising bubble movie in the glass the carbonation seems right.
Not sure I’m a fan of the style, but this beer seems to hit all the style notes I’ve read.

3 Sheeps Brewing The Wolf. 2024. Wisconsin's premier barrel-aged stout. This is not a hot take. This is the Ultimate Warrior taking the championship belt from Hulk Hogan. The color is pitch black, with a light brown foam ring, as a crown. The smell is freshly-baked brownies, warm fudge, and oven-baked cookies, with a light bourbon breeze. The taste is Tremblay's Sweet Shop fudge. The finest available. Vanilla, graham cracker, and milk chocolate. An impeccable combination. The mouthfeel is thick. Nice and thick. Unlike what the former champion was able to provide. Silky, smooth, and lucious. So nice. Overall, this is the finest barrel-aged stout available in Wisconsin.

Big ups to @RaulMondesi for this Societe Brewing Co. The Pupil IPA, 7.5%; 4.37 overall

Pour a slightly chill hazed gold with a thumb of pearl colored head. Pretty good head retention & fantastic lacing

S: A little bit of tropical fruit, some dank notes once warm

T: Mangoes, papayas, dryness, some pomelo, limes & a bit of grapefruit up front. A little bit of powdery dryness, sweet orange, & lime shows as this beer warms up, just a kiss of green melon as well. Finishes with some dryness, green melon, cantaloupes, papaya, & pomelo

MF: Medium body, medium carbonation, lovely balance

Great drinkability, nice balance of sweet fruits & bitterness on the tongue, the nose is the only thing that was below expectations on this beer & it was still pretty good

Wait, so is this 3.62 or 4.62?

I mean, when you get to this level, it's really splitting hairs, although I agree this doesn't have that wow factor you expect for a $40 bottle. In all honesty, I'd probably be as happy with the base as with this variant, but that's almost always the case. It's been a long time since I thought a variant earned its price. Maybe a mid-'10s coffee variant?
