For those of you folks who love Pilsners, below is a video from Nate Lanier on this topic. He discusses the details of brewing a Pilsner.

My lager brewing season is coming to a close and I have brewed three batches of Pilsners:

    · 1896 Michelob

    · Bohemian/Czech Pilsner

    · Alsatian Pilsner

    Cheers!

P.S. As with all lagers, process and patience is key here.

I should also mention that Trumer isn't widely available at retailers around here, but some of the stores with bigger liquor departments carry it.

Yeah, Gosser was everywhere. Also saw a number of Czech and German brewery beers, but not Trumer. Weird.

Gosser was pretty much synonymous with beer in Vienna. It was everywhere.

Fresh Trumer is a staple at local TJ's, going for $8.99/6 pack of cans. It's a no brainer buy.

Never seen it at TJ's around here, unfortunately. In fact, I really haven't seen sixes in a long time.

    $15 a 12-pack around here (retailer's usual sale) -- both bottles and cans -- definitely a no-brainer!

House is quiet for a little longer so I’m basking in the glory of this beautiful day on the deck; with a most refreshing beer.

Tonewood - Wading Out (AAL 5.2%)

This is what happens when a good brewer makes an AAL; it’s perfectly clean, carbed slightly higher, and has a perfect amount of hop bite, Tettnanger…I wonder if the notoriety of this style would slowly change if more beers like this were made.

As for the glass I just finished off a jar of gardiniera and thought its tall slenderness would serve this style well, it does the beer well. Hope others are embracing this beautiful day as well. Cheers.

Just saw this thread and thought I'd duck in to say, yes, *let's* give lagers some love. I'll be looking for a couple of good pilsners when I go shopping this week, something like Bitburger, Konig or Live Oak Pilz ... maybe one of Saint Arnold's pils or the trusty Real Ale Hans' Pils.

Great selection of stuff in here.

    Cheers!

I just came in from sitting on my backyard brick patio reading the latest issue of Zymurgy (the AHA magazine). There was a great article about the Beer Gardens of Germany (Munich area and Franconia).

Unfortunately I did not have a beer in my hand. :slight_frown:

One more week and my recent batch of 1896 Michelob should be available for drinking.

    Cheers!

P.S. I was just wearing a T-shirt and shorts. It seems that mother nature gave us an early spring day!

Yes. Turns out the old Pyramid brewery was over on Gilman St., no more than a half mile away. Interesting that two such sizeable breweries were located so close to one another. That area used to be pretty industrialized, so maybe zoning and rent/lease pricing were favorable (at least for the Bay area).

Okay, here's one that I expected to have a better review, but I'm not really sure when it was brewed.

Gifted a Sprecher Doppelbock purchased back in December -- but the date code on the can is odd. Not sure if it's even a canned-on or best-by date, and the Sprecher website doesn't even have any info on the dating OR the beer.

All that said, this beer had a really odd, dark fruit tartness (near to cough syrup) to it that made it undrinkable to me. Went right down the drain. Too bad, because Sprecher was the first "microbrewery" I ever got in to -- and even visited. Always liked their beers. Not sure if this is a sign of their new owners falling flat, or just old beer. Anyone know about Sprecher's dating codes?

@jesskidden -- think I should copy & paste for the Bock thread?

...bocks (but especially doppelbocks) are a favorite of lager styling of mine...this offering doesn't equate to a must-have repeat for me (although I do have a second can of it), but it does hit the spot for me this afternoon...

A generally nice, well-rounded bock offering.

I tried this one last year and have to say it was my favorite lager brewed by Rev. However, I found it pretty hot with alcohol and don't think I could drink more than one at a sitting.

...I found the alcohol presence pretty subdued (thus enjoyable) with this itereation...

Okay, but isn't that a Bourbon you have alongside this one?

And yeah, there could be a difference in two years' batches, I suppose.

I was quite surprised when Trumer started to show up around Brooklyn – only in 6-packs of bottles, and only in bodegas for a premium price. It is all gone now even though it still appears on their tracker. I wonder if it was a test run and eventually it will be available in normal stores.

All this talk of lagers... am having a glass of draft Moonlight Reality Czech pils. It's just delicious. We have some really good pils here in the PNW, but I'm not sure any of them can match this. There's a mouthwatering quality to this beer I seldom see.

All about the malts in good balance with the hops?

Yes. It's very well balanced, but with an unusually intense flavor profile. Probably why I like it so much. Alcohol is still reasonable (4.9%). It's definitely on the hoppy side, but not overly so IMHO. Quite delicious.
