I think that article is a little cringe.

Also, any critique of craft beer that states its not “open to change” is just asinine stupidity. Chasing trends is what’s tanked the industry. The only thing I might agree with is to get rid of the term craft, because there’s nothing artisanal or craft about most of these subpar breweries that popped up and lead to us having 100 different versions of mediocre hazy IPAs as these trend chasing business owners tried to tap into the wallets of people who like articles such as this.

I moreso cringe for the writer of that article. The writer of the article has more elitism than most and no taste for beer. I could barely get through the article. Haters will hate and this is another example of you can't please everyone.

It’s as simple as this….I’ll drink what I like(which is everything by the way), you drink what you like and we’ll stay out of eachother’s way.

Its easy to be a serious craft beer person without being a douche. Drink what you like. Enjoy what you like. Talk about it with people that give a hoot.

Here are 2 things in craft beer that make me cringe.
    1. People who walk into a bar and ask "What hazies do you have?"
While I definitely cannot fault people for liking what they like, it makes me sad that the only thing people want are hazies and none of the other amazingly curated options on the menu at a killer beer bar. Don't get me wrong, I can enjoy some of the masters of the style, however, I think hazies in general accelerated the cringe of craft beer culture.

    2. Craft Beer Influencers on social media.
Bro. Just enjoy your beer. It's always so blatantly obvious when people just post some long unoriginal post about how this beer is their favorite and by the way let me match it to an outfit and let me do some lame dance with the beer or video pouring and tasting the beer. Idk man. Share what you like and enjoy but the videos.

I read about 1/2 of the article and got bored. My motto is basically to each their own. you want to like or dislike XXX fine, just don't try push it on me if I do or don't.

I go to a point where the article made me laugh and say OMG (am I too old to say that?)

At the risk of being labeled as I was after replying to another post, I think this article was written towards a group of people that are less tolerant or views they don't agree with or dare I say the more woke crowd. There I said it, let the hate messages to me begin.....GO.

To be fair, guess who is just as (if not more) intolerant of views they disagree with than the so-called “woke” crowd—that’s right, I don’t even have to say it.

I didn't read the article, but am responding to the discussion.

As I saw quite a few "replace the word" posts here, but quoted this as I was thinking the same thing. It's been accepted as a term, even if it might not be an accurate description. So, as you say, we would need an alternative, and we'll likely need to find one that is not much more than the single syllable one we already have to catch on.

    I mean, saying in general...
    • "I like beer I like" is useless
    • "I like beer that isn't made by these three large beer companies" just doesn't roll of the tongue
    • others have talked about the term microbrews
    • "I like locally made beer" - every beer is made locally somewhere
Perhaps we can come up with a nice, easy term, but I'm pretty sure this topic has been discussed for quite a few years and nothing's changed so far. And I think I've expended about the amount of energy I care to in helping to try to change it (which I actually don't really care if we do or not)

There are official designations for most highly regarded wines that are used widely by consumers. See, for example, this article:
    https://capstonecalifornia.com/study-guides/regions/california/california/wine_law
I doubt that there is a regulation for putting a fine wine into a box, however.
There is no comparable system for beer, so "craft beer: is a handy shorthand for "not big beer".

Just so I never have to utter the phrase “I enjoy craft beer” or “I drink craft beer,” do whatever you want. I think it’s silly.

I just found her website. This lady is a cicerone, a millennial (based on her picture), a dog owner, a Brooklynite, and some type of tarot reader.

Anyway, stick to your writing and your black magik, and I’ll stick to drinking beer and reading more interesting articles than the one you wrote, Courtney.

I use the term “microbrew” because I associate the word “beer” with carbonated piss.

Oh shit, I’m a beer snob :flushed:

Well to be honest yes, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing and here is why, apologies for the grandpa Simpsonesque rant, again,

Now, craft beer is established, but only as much as, I cannot see, say in ten years, only adjunct lager being available.

However, it is still counter-culture, in as much as I cannot see it outselling adjunct lager in, the say next thirty years.

Now aside from craft beer & real ale, I associate myself with punk, goth & metal, am I cringe, hell yes! In the mid eighties with my leather jacket & Megadeth bandana I was cringe, in the late eighties in my frock coat & Sisters of Mercy shirt I was cringe, hell even in the early nineties with my 28” waist purple slacks & tie dye Alice in Chains shirt I was cringe. We never had more presence than the corporate music scene.

Bad news people, I cannot see, overall, worldwide, craft beer outselling corporate beer anytime soon.

But it ain’t that bad, Henry Rollins, Robert Smith & Dave Mustaine are going to be cringe to most of the fans of Ariana Grande, Teddy Swims & Kanye West.

So sometimes like the fickle current trend might put craft beer en vogue like retro crazes put alternative music of a particular style or time period back into style, but it is still going to be marching to a different drum, in the great scheme.

What we need to ensure, is it is that cringe that applies, especially when Craft has it’s moments in the sun, like goth and punk, the cringe that is unforgivable, is seeing that craft beer makes us superior. Smugness, egotism, unapproachable cliques, this is the cringe that will destroy craft beer.
“Oh Blue moon isn’t craft, why don’t you fuck off from my sight”
Okay I hate blue moon, it is my one drainpour, but if someone tells me that is their favourite or bud, then that is their choice their palate.
Let’s be ambassadors of good beer, let us try to remain mostly positive.
