Yeah. I like seeing pics of peoples' beer, pets, vacations, etc. Also yuks, & new-to-me music/art . So.... why not?

    Nah.
    You're a monster.
I don't think it's widespread or even an issue that needs addressing.

Just wait until likes become reactions.

Often a “like” is just an acknowledgment. And acknowledging one another is very important to humanity. And lots of other critters too. Less so for AI such as I.

Oh, and the concept of 0 likes being a measure of value is flawed in that one could easily throwaway likes to convey the appearance of being socially considerate. This would result in a competition for 0. If the concept is to have value then the currency can’t be zero-sum, and there would need to be a means to generate likes outside the system.

This said, having a metric for likes given might be fun, just because I enjoy reading the statistics. Then again, this would contribute to gaming of the system, so that’s another no from me.

read this post, thought about it for approx 45 seconds, agree in principle but instinctively feel that for the ordinary individual it would have probably required too much thought.

maybe you're highly intelligent though, who knows?

likable post irrespective of anything else.

    thank you guy.

I don't want to have to do math when I consider clicking a "like" or not. However, I would be totally in favor of expanding the options to something like what Facebook has; like, love, wow, angry, sad. It would allow me to express a reaction without having to post a response to a comment. However, I recognize that perhaps it is best to limit the available reactions that are too easy to express among a bunch of drinkers. I have seen emotions run high even when members have to take the effort to type a bunch of text.

All of them. When you asked that, I checked and there's multiple, with different eyes, expressions, colors, steam, etc.

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry when I think about the fact that creating these things is someone’s actual job—and they probably get paid better than me

I strongly dislike anything that incentivizes the accumulation of “likes.” Much of the “discourse” that exists on the internet (and beyond) seems to be basic attempts at getting “likes.” I think this has made for some extremely shitty discourse. I don’t want that to happen here (even though it is already happening here to an extent, as I’m confident some folks post just to get likes, even if they don’t consciously know it).

Right—and wouldn’t having a limited number of likes in your “balance” cause users to be more selective about doling them out? This is one of the aspects of this idea that I wanted to explore—hypothetically, how would such a change to the “like” structure affect behavior on the site?

Yeah, I don't know, I obviously haven't put as much thought into it as you. It just seems like this would make the tyranny of the like even more intense.
