Barleywine Appreciation Thread (2024)

Hell yeah! Hope you had a fruitful trip, apart from barleywine accumulation of course.

 

It was a good trip. The daughter decided on IUP and we spent a day playing tourist in Pittsburgh. I'd drink a barleywine tonight but am just too damned tired.

The parking at East End made me laugh; just pull your car up onto the sidewalk!

 

Yep, I remember lol. We didn't eat when we were there last year, just stayed for one round but I really liked the place.

You need to get to PNC for a Phils game, great atmosphere.

 

Yep, that's on my to-do list.

Indiana, PA has 2 brewpubs, but at the moment no barleywines. Can't have it all I guess.

 

Sounds like you have a good kid making good choices. You can bring the barleywine.

 

From Suarez - a sweet English sipper - caramel/dates/some pear and just about zero hops detected. Going to enjoy this one for a few hours.

 

well, this was excellent. tons of barrel, malt forward with toffee and dark bread plus light dark fruit. super smooth for 16%. would definitely buy again.

Scorched Earth's Jolly Old Scrooge (smoked maple), an English Barleywine (sounds like a Christmas beer, and maybe it was). An interesting take with the smoked malts and maple, just a hint of both but it lacks something on the finish. Oh well.

 

East End Gratitude



So I finally got some of this, if it wasn't obvious from yesterday's post. The quick story is that we took our daughter to tour some colleges in western PA, one of which was Pitt. My only personal goal was to stop by East End and grab some of this. Mission accomplished. This is an excellent American Barleywine. I'm thinking I may do a side-by-side with either Bigfoot or Blithering Idiot. Both maybe, with some help!

 

Did you stop and have a beer or just in to shop? I was near there a couple of weeks ago but it was closed that day

 

Grab & go. We were hungry but more interested in checking in to our hotel and freshening up.

Big Dog Craft Brewing Tap 12 American Barleywine



5 oz. pour as I had to drive. I enjoyed this; had a flavor I didn't recognize and can't quite describe. The finish had some nice hop bitterness. It can be tough to get a good taste from a small serving but I nursed it for a while and chewed it over, so to speak.

They have some barleywine aging in a barrel that they're tapping in July. Might be a good excuse for a BA meet-up.

 

Crowler purchased at Wild Onion, Solstice Jo, a sessionable 9% Barleywine, untappd says American, BA says English. I think it's pretty solid.
