Well. This is a load of horse hockey.
The dead give away that this here 'traditional' West Coast IPA is being a poseur to that is in the copy. I mean when something is telling me that it is "delivering a punchy sweet and bright peach body intertwined with doses of citrus?"It's not going to be a traditional West Coast IPA.
When something has hops that have flavors of Yuzu fruit, and some random Orange I've never heard of, and a new hop with notes of mango, guava, lychee, and the more recent autotune classic: Citra, which became more known by way of Munster, Indiana and 3 Floyd's
IT'S NOT A TRADTIONAL WEST COAST IPA

Friend gave me a beer claiming to be a WCIPA. Read the description-hopped w/ Nelson Sauvin, Motueka + Rakau. Poured about as pale as a macro light lager, smelled like a NEIPA, and tasted like dirt covered stone fruit. I’m not trying to discriminate against hops here but I think those who are looking for a WCIPA need to check the hop profile before buying. If it doesn’t at least have one of simcoe, Columbus, Amarillo, cascade, centennial, chinook, summit (I know), then shame on you for buying it.

And maybe it’s just me but this whole campaign for “clear WCIPAs” is odd to me. I always got excited when I saw some chill haze in a WCIPA because to me, that meant it was fresh and well dry hopped.

I don't mind brewers making these slightly-more-bitter, slightly-less-turbid versions of hazy IPAs. It seems like a natural evolution of that style.

I do mind them taking advantage of paying customers by labeling it something it's not.

Don't make a brown ale and call it a pilsner. And don't make a sweet, floral, tropical stonefruit-tasting beverage and call it west coast.

If your "west coast IPA" isn't assertively bitter with dank, pine, resiny flavors dominating, and maybe a little citrus if there's any fruitiness at all, it's not a west coast IPA. If you try to trick me into buying your beer by calling it one anyway, I'm not buying any of your products anymore.

For me it is all expectation management. I have adopted a mental translation of labels that say "WCIPA" into "an IPA that is not hazy" and then I check the can description and the listed hops. I like WCIPA, but I also like other IPAs that are more generic in the American IPA category that don't have the intense pine/dank profile. I can see the frustration, though, if someone ONLY wants something in the pine/dank/uber-bitter profile

A review I typed like a week ago:

Another not-quite-a-west-coast-IPA "west coast IPA". *sigh* Way too fruity and juicy, nowhere near bitter enough. The fuck ya gonna do, though? This trend ain't going away; might be best to just avoid anything labeled as such at this point.

In my experience one can still find good WCIPA'S, but a bit more "truth in advertising" would be nice. I recently attended a smoke and dank event in PDX, and was a bit annoyed when not one of the IPAs served had any dankness. Two of the IPAs were hazies from Great Notion, with one given the name of "roach clip.". They were fine beers if you like hazy style IPAs, but there was nothing dank about them.

I can only assume that the perception among brewers is that dankness isn't a quality most consumers want in their IPAs, even those labeled as WCIPA'S.

I find most batches of SH to be a bit more malty than I want in a WC dipa, but at least it does have some dankness. It's a very solid WC dipa otherwise.

Go into the brewery and whip out the old style guidelines book. If it doesn’t match up to the WCIPA guidelines demand a refund. They can either start brewing a proper WCIPA or label it properly.

I've always said that IPAs, in general, are extremely overrated. Raul, I love when you speak your mind. Cheers, brother!
