    Greetings all!

Yesterday was Victory day in Europe, marking on the European continent and theater the end of WW2 and final surrendering of the last Third Reich leader after ******’s suicide - namely Karl Dönitz.

Today is a holiday here because of the Ascension which is a religious feast this time. For the most pious of you, of which I’m not really I wanted to still emphasize it and wish those that celebrate a good one.

Drinking a Pale Ale from northern France:

After first two, finishing a Snake River Zonker Stout. A great blast from the past. Hadn't had this in probably a dozen years or more and it's still as delicious as I remember.

Good Thursday BA's! Laundry underway and swapping cycling computers from the Garmin Edge 705, that served me well for 15 years, to a new Garmin Edge 530. Founders French Toast Bastard is tasting great!

Good day BAs! Thanks @Shanex for starting today's thread! We have the beginnings of yet another damp, cool day - otherwise, not too exciting.

Today's New Breakfast Beer - POSTIMAGES is being temperamental today, so no pic - but it's Sam Adams Jack-O. I was surprised I'd never tried this considering how many of Sam Adams I've tried over the years.

Final Impression and summation: 2.75 (After deducting 0.25 point for ambiguous date) Water and spice, some pumpkin would have been nice. Good price point, but beyond that …
    Rating 2.95, rDev -7.8%

If I were adding the to the data base, I'd call it "Spice Ale" since both the aroma and flavor suggest no pumpkins were harmed to make it.

As always I dedicate my holidays to answering your most urgent questions.
What you were contacting me for over the last weeks: Heph, as a connaisseur of Weißbier, could you tell us: can Liddls Patronus stand up to a renowned Weissen like Spadens Franziskaner?

Well, let us give it a try.

I think the comparison is kind of fair. As both come with 5% abv. Both mention themselves as being "premium beer" and being "naturtrüb" (natural cloudy). Both feature a monk on the label enjoying a pint.

Patronus is availble here at 99 euro cents a bottle. Der Franzi has recently raised its price with 30 cents and comes now here at 1,79 euro.

So let us get this going:

Heads pretty simular. Carbonation on Patronus a bit more high bubbles. Franzi a bit more microbubbles and a bit darker amber colour. Nicer lacing too.
Smell: of course the concencus is to address banana and gloves. I guess both have it. Patronus has a lot of ester-like notes and some dried plumbs sweet Barley malt in the smell. Franzi less pronounced, more bready, biscuity with a bit of smoked salami.

Mouthfeel of Franzi is way superiour. More creamy and full. Patronus is a bit watery and thin
Taste like: the Patronus is not bad at first but gets a bit annoying after some time. It gives some impressions of a malty 0% beer and having artificial sweeteners in it. Of course there is not, both beers are brewed respecting the German purity law.
Franzi is full bodied, well balanced, smooth... It never lets you down.

So to my opinion the Franzikaner is worth the 80 cents more. Left over Patronus goes down the drain. I stick with Franzi today.

    Thanks for the nice comparison!
I think I'll stay away from the Patronus.

I only once had this Houthakker (Dutch for LumberJack). I remember it as a rather good beer. Like some others from northern France. When it comes to beer this region is probably somewhat part of Flanders.
    Cheers!

Depending of your style of choice, plenty of good beers in the Flemish (to call it that) part of France, Lille/Risjel and around. Bière de Garde such as Jenlain, 3 Monts, la Goudale and their variants. Those are not for everyone, better served cold but enjoyable. All those have been around for many decades. Cheers.

Yes, actually, I hoped to find the New Perlenbacher 5,5% abv Weißbier which might replace the Petrunas.
That guy of Real Ale Craft Beer has a set and was saying it was just as good as Paulaner.

Do not trust him so much with these kind of judgements as he tends to fancy cheaper beers, but well, eager to try.

Sometimes you can be surprised by some cheap stuff. And some other times even be surprised by cheap stuff was produced by a fancy brewery (without attaching their name to the product).
Best way is to try, but I trust your opinion on this one
