Yellowhammer Brewing Gold Light American Lager

Beautiful golden color with good white cap.

Aroma of sweet grain and light floral hops.

Taste is sweet but it's a refrained sweetness. It's actually quite rich without being cloying. A dusting of hops help keep things in balance. At 5% it's not really a "light" beer, nor does it taste like one being actually full of flavor. I guess the Brewer is emphsising a sense of lightness about the beer generally as opposed to an IPA, Stout or Porter.

Makes sense, but that's not what I think of when I see "American light lager" on a can. Unless I went to the trouble of checking the abv. on the label, I'd probably assume the worst (light, flavorless, swill), and pass it by. That would be a shame, as it sounds like a very nice beer (one I would probably enjoy).

Continuing my lager loving ways with a Triptych Eraclea. Dry-hopped pale lager, with Italian grown malt and German saphir hops. Cheers to lagers!

Two Pitchers Baseline Lager is quite smooth. Very session-like.

This is a nice brew. Its overall ratings are shockingly low. Astra Urtyp

Well, it sure looks tasty in that glass.

Do you think the low(er) ratings is because for the BA crowd this beer is not 'exciting' enough?

    Cheers!

I dunno why. A couple of thoughts: folks didn't get a fresh import or just aren't thrilled by this style in the first place. I can't really know how folks in Germany feel about this beer. Maybe its cheap and or just regional. But to your point, the wow factor level is in the heart of the drinker and yes I agree it could be that its simplicity is dull to some. The 6pk I just bought tastes nice and the date code is L 601116

It's like a full bodied, less carbonated high life. So, excellent.

Here's a different kind of Lager-- an Amber Lager called "Uncommon Common" from Wander in Bellingham. Sure is pretty, and quite boldly flavored with hops and some kind of roasted malt.

In my experience, it's probably a little of both. Pilsners generally don't seem to garner very high scores on BA ( especially foreign made versions), and then there's the freshness issue. My highest scoring pils was from Wurzburger, a beer I had on tap. I've subsequently had it out of the bottle and it clearly wasn't as good. My impression was that freshness was a significant issue, making it very difficult to give the beer a high score.

After reading over some of the BA reviews, I wouldn't be at all surprised if that's part of the problem with the Astra.

I recently had Tucher Helles for the 1st time and quality wise, Astra is on par with that. Freshness can make a huge diff. I used to get stubby bottles of Wurzburger when I lived in MA for like $10 per case. Ha! Cheers!

Scoring some brownie points with the Mrs. is never a bad idea. She doesn't drink, but loves Luke Combs, and wanted these special Beer Never Broke My Heart Lite beer cans. I informed my walking partner he can help me empty them. Haven't had a Lite in awhile, but will be soon. Cheers to lagers!

Stopped at Pour Man's Brewing (Ephrata, PA). Had a mug of the House Lager, which is a Czech style Polotmave. They had a great lineup of lagers, I brought a variety of cans home.

Amazing taplist... was there some sort of event going on? At least where I live, this would be be considered an unusually excellent lager selection. And I live in a part of the country where outstanding taplists are fairly typical.

No special event. It seems they are focusing on lager styles. I was a little surprised as well - even Human Robot Brewing in Philly who specializes in German and Czech style lagers - usually has about 2/3 of their taplist dedicated to lagers - the other 1/3 IPAs.

John, would you be willing to give Ephrata Lager a try?

    Cheers!
