    I would agree
Funny, I drank my last cellared bottles of each within the last year or so. With that much age, not a lot of difference to them

Back when fresh - my notes from my reviews (and my recollection) is that Old Guardian was aggressively bitter and boozy, where as Double Bastard was much more balanced between the malt flavors and hop bitterness.

It's been awhile since I had old guardian but from mental notes what I remember is Double Bastard has a more complex malt profile fresh and OG developed more complexity over time but was kind of an imperial IPA to start.

Picked up a 6 pack of Double Bastard today. This is was my first time having it as I never had the original.
I very much enjoyed it. While there is definitely a strong hop presence, I didn’t find it palate wrecking in the least. I found it to be a very well balanced beer that at least to me sort of reminded me of an amped up Celebration.
I will probably cellar a few for the fall/winter because to me it would be the perfect beer for that time of year.

    Have you seen it?

According to Stone's Beer Finder - when I search from my location, they are showing nothing in the suburban Philly area. Only Lehigh Valley, Reading, and NJ:

No. Matt Capones weekly email, which is a pretty good indicator of what's dropped in the area, didn't mention it either. This looks a little more hopeful that the SSR map which didn't have any South Jersey locations. Hoping another week will bring more green dots...

Hopefully. Or if not, I'll bit the bullet and drive up to Shangy's

Bingo. Same memory. I enjoyed OG, but my Stone favorites were/are Double Bastard, Ruinten, and Vertical Series. I did really like their oak/smoked OG.

I miss the old Stone days...

I just had my first double Bastard in probably more than a decade. I must admit, if I had to guess if it was an Old Guardian or DB, I probably would have said OG, I think they’re pretty similar beers, but I would buy OG by the case and only had DB a couple of times. I still have one last OG from the year my son was born, so I probably won’t be cracking that one open just yet.

Not to be found anywhere in the San Francisco Bay Area. Too bad it isn’t brewed in CA or anything.

...speaking of Alesmith, I just scored a 6x12oz of their IPA (highly rated on BA) at Grocery Outlet for $7. Ya, it was canned on 3/25/24 so not exactly "fresh" (which is why they have it at Grocery Outlet) but it is still quite good. Perhaps one of the best $7/6pk deals for IPA I have run into.

Since I've never had this beer, I was only planning on grabbing one 6er but when I saw the price ($14.49), I grabbed a second. I hope @Resistance88 is right about this beer, which he probably is. It's the beers he doesn't like that he's wrong about sometimes lol Looking forward to digging in tomorrow hopefully.

the fact i can get this shit for 2.50 /single at trader joes is mind boggling in today's market with boutique brewries charging arms and legs for smiliar stuff.

Also no one asked...but my boy at Stone said hardly anyone showed up for Double Bastard on release day and people still aren't really ordering it much. MORE FOR ME!

I had my first can last night (first in awhile, I had it back in the day). It's a Barleywine to me. Reminds me of Bigfoot (which aligns with the comment in this thread about it being an amped up Celebration).

And to me American Barleywine's when fresh are pretty much double IPAs.

Over the years, it seems like "we" have had many conversations on BA on the difference between a strong ale, barleywine (English and American), and a DIPA. Yes, Double Bastard has similarities to Bigfoot, but overall, I have thought of Double Bastard as a strong ale (more of a malt backbone). If we have the discussion ten years, I thought Bigfoot was far hoppier and more of a DIPA than an American Barleywine.

    Anyways, I love them all!

This years release tastes just like the recent Bigfoot release.

Have you had them both recently?
