I thought this might be fun. Here’s the premise: You can have only one type of “American”-style IPA for the rest of your life: West Coast or New England. Other IPA styles (English, black, Belgian etc.) are not part of this poll. To simplify things (I know people will say IPAs don’t fit neatly into these two styles, and that is obviously true), for the purposes of this poll “WCIPA” means it’s more or less clear (transparent, not colorless) and has higher IBUs (more bitterness) and a more “dank” or “resinous” hop profile, while “NEIPA” means it’s relatively hazy (opaque) and has lower IBUs (less bitterness) and a more “juicy” hop profile.

The point of the poll is to find out which of these two very broad IPA styles BAs would prefer if it meant they could never have the other style again. I’m hoping this is a tough choice for many of you. Cheers!

Seriously, it's not even close .. west coast is the best coast compared to the NEIPA

I know you're trying to force the issue with "only one", but I like both equally. Which of my kids do like better?

Conditionally if they are both at the top of the class, I'll go with NEIPA. Top notch haze is hard to beat. The BeerAdvocates may revolt.

Right, that’s the whole point of the poll (I forgot to include the Highlander quote). It’s not supposed to be an easy choice, though for some people I’m sure it is.

So, which of your kids do you like better? (I have it easy as our daughter is an only child.)

West coast and it’s not even remotely close.

Haze is like today's rappers. They're everywhere, and you can smell their stink from a mile away. The stuff that passes for NEIPA is cheap imitation. If it looks like milk, it must taste great, right? So, yeah, given the option, I'll take WCIPA.

Give me a piney, dank, high IBU WCIPA or give me death!

So, I picked WCIPA but what @TheIPAHunter said sums it up nicely. The problem with NEIPAs is that there is a ton of mediocrity in the style IMHO. But I'd put the best NEIPAs (Tree House, Trillium, Other Half and others) against the best WCIPAs any day. And it'd be a delightful side-by-side.

Easy-peasy: clear, non-frooty IPAs are the only rational choice.

Maybe if I lived on the west coast and had access to fresh local WCIPA I’d feel different. But I don’t, in fact I live about 40mins from Treehouse, who, in my opinion make the best IPA’s in the region, and probably in the country. Give me Julius or gave me death!

There are plenty of mediocre WCIPAs out there too. It’s too late now, but I suppose I could amend the question to ask if you had to choose between your favorite WCIPA and your favorite NEIPA, and could never have the other one ever again (or any other beer of that same style), which would you choose.

I think it depends upon what you're looking for in an IPA. If you're a fan of NEIPAs, than I feel like Treehouse is pretty much the gold standard. However, if NEIPAs aren't your thing, then the fascination with Treehouse is a bit puzzling. Have to confess that was my reaction to Julius. I could see and understand the accolades, but it never resonated for me. I found it to be a good IPA, but no better than that. However, as hazies go, it's one of the better ones in my experience.

I already did this. It wouldn't be hard to miss a lot of the auto-tune generation of hops either.

Love Julius, and always pick up a four pack if it’s available. It’s a terrific flagship IPA, but it’s just one of many IPA’s that treehouse hits out of the ballpark.
Agreed, if you’re not into NEIPA then treehouse isn’t your bag. Although, their lagers and stouts are well regarded in the beer community.

Swap Fidens (or even Tired Hands) with OH, and I'm with you. But RR or Alchemist (yeah, I know) will still come out on top.

I know it’s still early but I’m very surprised. Thought it would be much closer. Wonder how different results would have been 3–5 years ago.

Tracking with you. And we're probably talking regional too as I bet you see a lot more WCIPA mediocrity than I do, just on a volume basis. Purely opinion here: I'd pick the mediocre WCIPA over the mediocre NEIPA everytime.
