The California State Senate passed a bill that would ban schools from informing parents of their children’s pronoun change. The government should never interfere with parental rights.

Well since that’s just about speech, it gets into First Amendment rights. Are you saying the state should be able to tell us what words we can/can’t use?

Fair, yeah he definitely know what can or can’t be posted. Occasionally we had some users starting such threads, fine unless their headline was provoking or looking to engage a fight right from the beginning. Civility shall prevail, I’m probably naive though. Cheers!

I was not aware of the word schlocky. I looked it up. I may use it going forward, but first I will try it out in a beer review to see how it flows.

Yes, the tidbits of largely meaningless trivia that are carefully crafted to illicit an emotional response. We used to call it click bait, now it seems to be the typical mode of journalism.

And your counterpart on the other side of the issue also reads, that's why they're so worried about the children in California or New York schools. After all, they heard about that one teacher or that one school district that may or may not have done something.

This issue has gone off the rails in our culture exactly because it has lost the potency of a truly existential struggle. It's become a largely toothless tool of pandering and posturing for politicians. And so you have the predictable enclaves taking it to predictable extremes that accomplish little other than to stoke outrage and to push the actual work of raising and educating children to be productive participants on the society we want further back in the minds of schools.

Whether it's California telling schools they can hide a minors gender transition from their family or threatening to remove a child if the parents won't provide medicalized transition or it's Utah making a state law to ban trans kids from school sports or Florida threatening to take kids if they do allow medicalized transition, its all a bunch of noise. Red meat to cash in on the nuanced situations of a tiny minority while further ignoring the degrading quality of service provided to everyone involved.

Take care of your mental state out there fellas. Suicide rates correlate disturbingly well with beer consumer demographics.

See it how you want, but when a state (not limited to Mississippi and Idaho, obviously) enacts actual legal policy to treat a class of citizens differently or exclude them in some way, it sends a very real message. It might be intended as performance politics but as long as the laws are on the books it has real consequences.

Yeah a hard life we have here. Part of the problem in this country is we have all become extremely self centered. It's always " not my problem let the other guy worry about it" But coincidentally you happen to have a choice, which many don't have. You don't have to have shit crammed down your throat while you cook dinner. You can grab your pipe, slippers and beer and choose not to listen or watch things that annoy you.

I take mental health very seriously and genuinely didn’t know about this correlation, at least for those that drink moderately, are reasonable and keep their lives on the right track while enjoying their evening booze. Homelessness, severe alcoholism is one different issue that saddens me too.

Thanks for pointing this out because I didn’t know the Pride Month coincide with mental health awareness month too.

Bingo!! A voice of reason. The persons making it political are obvious by they way they make their responses.
And here's another thing that better not piss people off - Weds is Juneteenth. It's a federal holiday - so whether you like it or not....

10 years ago, many brands were changing their labels pink in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Most of the ones that did used it as a way to market their product instead of genuinely supporting the cause first. Lame. Eventually it stopped being cool and very few brands go pink during October anymore.

I feel the same about brands changing their labels into rainbow colors in June. It feels like a marketing ploy first with the cause in the back seat. Lame. To be fair, Anheuser-Busch has donated money to the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce over the past few years (see article), but with everyone and their cousin doing that same marketing ploy at the same time, it feels superficial.

I'd rather donate directly to a cause than buy something because it has that cause in its marketing.

You know that I do not support the state limiting our free speech. My post made no mention of anything even remotely close to that.

I hold the scientifically sound view that sex is determined by a person’s chromosomes. Anyone can call themselves anything they want, but if a boy starts saying he’s a girl while at school the boy’s parents should certainly be notified.

Now there are a number of hermaphroditic/intersex people out there. Some estimates put that number as high as 1.7% of the population. These people have a genuine medical condition, and aren’t just going through a phase or following a fad.

And this is just to boost ratings? I don't believe media can trickle down to "spoonfeed" And who says the movement has has achieved its objectives and that in the "majority of public spaces the overwhelming majority are excepted as they are"? Your personal experience doesn't carry over to the "overwhelming majority"

My point was only that whether you call someone he/him, she/her, or they/them, it’s just words. And you can’t really regulate words without coming up against the First Amendment. California probably thought about that before enacting this law.

You don't think the media can spoon-feed people tailor built content? Are you familiar with the Internet ? Social media? That's literally what it does.

And yes, beyond my personal experience, the overwhelming majority of public spaces in the United States are incredibly accepting by any global and/or historical standard.

As discussed earlier, 60 years ago the police in NYC were raiding bars where gay people hung out. There are plenty of countries today where it's explicitly illegal to be gay. In contrast homosexuality and transgender identities are ubiquitous in American culture.

Dude you've been good but don't talk to me like I'm stupid. I'm well aware and I don't agree. The exact reason I usually don't comment on these threads is your response. I'm getting back to beer and you can keep spitting out your personal bs. And I'd like to know where you get your stats about being fully accepted. Just because thats a world view doesnt have squat to do with here. Lets see your stats on acceptance.Cheers
