My appreciation for this beer can’t be stated strongly enough. I know this is listed here as an American Strong Ale, and it is definitely that, but with the resiny pine that provides head-walloping bitterness similar to an OG WCDIPA and the brawny malt backbone of a big barleywine, this could be any one of the three, IMHO - but the one thing it definitely is in my humblest of opinions is world class. Absolutely love it.

    1) BlackStack More Than Just A Phase (8.3% no canning date): A NIPEA from Minnesota with Mosaic, New Zealand Nectaron & experimental HBC 1019 for flavors of juicy pineapple, mango, berries, grape with a smooth stonefruit and mango creamy finish.
    versus
    2) BlackStack Pseudoscience (8.4% no canning date): A NEIPA from Minnesota with Citra, Nectaron, and Nelson for flavors of Orange citrus, pineapple, white grape, berries, and mango. Clean. (Mismatched the two beers blind)

    Winner: BlackStack Pseudoscience
BlackStack IPA Battle, or a Phase Three vs Toppling Goliath Battle. First is More Than Just a Phase, a collab with Phase Three in Chicago. Mosaic, Nectaron, some HBC 1019 giving it a stonefruit, nectarine, tropical grape sweetness.
Next is Pseudoscience, a collab with Toppling Goliath in Iowa. Also has Nectaron, but then Citra and Nelson which gives it a bit more brightness. Juicy grapefruit, pineapple, mango skins with some vinous New Zealand notes as well. The Citra and Nelson add that bit of brightness and cleanliness that makes me enjoy this more.
Still, a BlackStack, Phase Three, Toppling Goliath collab IPA is about the best haze in the Midwest. So happy Friday with these two beers!

New Glarus IPA. Had to grab a 12 pack of this on my way out of Wisconsin this morning. I really enjoyed this last year and this years' batch is just as good. Earthy, herbal, grassy, slightly dank hop character I remember from the first batch, but with a bit more spritzy ruby red grapefruit flesh and peel. Bright, crisp, and clean with a nice bitterness. Awesome.

Back at Real Ale Brewing...their facility is awesome.

Multiple buildings for bars, brewing, and distilling. With a huge outdoor area not even pictured.

Had their 28th Anniversary Black IPA. Not usually a style I gravitate towards, but this is really good.

Nimble Giant on a Happy Friday, BAs. Pretty much just as I remember it after some years since my last one. Piney and bitter. Solidly a (newish) classic in my estimation as its not an OG brew (released in 2016). Enough nerd noise...CHEERS!

    And their Phoenix Double ESB

Both are old school Real Ale offerings, which I think they only made again because of their anniversary. Hoping this is not the last time to have either. Both excellent as always.

Well...whether I get my power back or not, I'm heading back to Houston tomorrow. I have been working remotely from my hotel room (my pupper, Moe has been loving the kind sized bed he can jump around in and mess up at all times). Then I go out brewery and distillery hopping after work. It has been a nice and interesting stop in Texas Hill Country, just hoping I can have some semblance of normalcy when I get back home...

Amorphic Zonkey Matrix IPA (Citra, Strata, Amarillo cryo). This was the most impressive brewery I went to in Milwaukee on my trip. Their lagers were good and IPA's were outstanding. Probably the best IPA's I've had out of that city. This one is full of navel orange and tangerine, as well as some cannabis dank, lemon zest, ruby red grapefruit, bubblegum, citrus peel, pine resin, and floral. Soft and silky feel. Top notch stuff.
