Maybe it’s the million flight beers, or the hot blue evening overlooking the lake, or the exhaustion after a day of assorted bullshittery and swimming, or maybe it’s the ass of the beer itself. But goddamn. I’m having a good time and this beer is involved.

This can feels like it developed a little wonkiness...some Chardonnay-like creaminess and surprisingly bright citrus notes. Maybe the can is surpressing the oxidative notes I normally associate with JW Lee’s. Might have to open a bottle of the same vintage to compare...

I grabbed a 4-pack of these little guys a few years ago. I've never seen Harvest Ale anywhere, so I needed to get this when I saw it. It was good, but not amazing. I chalk it up to me not liking sherry cask stuff. When I was into Scotch, I really didn't like Sherry aged offerings (MaCallan)

2021 Bigfoot. It's actually not my favorite vintage. I have enjoyed some older and newer ones a bit more. Can't really put my finger on it. Still awesome though!

I also disliked this one, but there has also been some discussion about the inferiority of canned J.W. Lees. I have had the regular in cans and bottles and the bottles are way better (IMO). If you find a bottle, give it a try!

Figured Id share this one with y'all. Cross posted with what New England Beer are you Drinking?

This is Barreled Souls and their Bombs Over Barley barleywine. Aged in Elijah Craig barrels for 12 months and 2 days and registering 16.1% ABV. Bottle 63/ 1080.

Sampling a cellar temp 500 ml bottle poured into my snifter. Picked up at the brewery as part of my bottle society stash last fall. This beer was bottled 12/20/2022. Its been in my cellar for the past 10 months.
The beer pours a rich mahogany color and no light passes through my glass. A few small pieces of dredge enter my glass towards the end of the pour.
A fizzy beige head foams up about 1 cm and fades to a thin edge layer soon after the pour. A large island is being re-fed by active streams of carbonation leading to surface activity. But no new foams sustains itself.
The aroma on this beer is on the sweeter side. I get some caramel and brown sugar mixing with vanilla and bourbon notes. Definitely some dates and raisins for a fruity side and no hop presence to speak of. there is a bit of fusol boozey note however, which isnt a surprise at 16.1%.
First sip reveals a medium body with smooth texture and very fine rolling carbonation that gently caresses by palate on each sip. Beer feels like a barleywine.
Flavor is similar to the nose but fruitier up front, raisins and dates again but then some charred wood and bourbon notes come through and the bourbon is less sweet than on the nose. A good bit of fusol alcohol kicks in with black peppery bite and warming on each swallow. Hops are not to be found in this beer.
This is a tasty beer, but is very robust and will be quite a sipper for me. Glad to have tried this one.

Port Barrel-Aged Barleywine from Blindman Brewing in Alberta. This is their Perepllut barleywine aged in tawny port barrels that were coopered at Tacopal Tonnellerie in Miranda do Douro on the border of the Portugal and Spain. This is bottled still, which generally works for me. Comes in at 10.9% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a muddy brown with no head, as expected. The nose is very dark-fruit forward. The port obviously plays the role here. Port, blackberries, earthy, toffee, oak, grapes, and an every-so-slight hint of hops.

The taste is wonderful. Diverges quite a bit from the nose. I get slight citrus peel, pipe tobacco, black licorice, burnt toffee, port, resin, leather, and unripe peach. Very smooth mouthfeel.

The aftertaste lingers for an extended time, delighting the senses with evolving flavors. Starts fruity and becomes a bit smoky. Very intense. Overall, a wonderful beer that lies at the fringe of barleywines.

Barreled Souls out of Saco , Maine and their Double Barrel Aged Wisdom tonight. This beer was in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels then Bardstown Bourbon Rum-Finished barrels. Collab beer with Horus.
18.2% ABV. My bottle is 1660/1800.

Sampling a cellar temp 375 ml bottle poured into my snifter. Beer was bottled just a little over 1 year ago on July 10, 2023.
The beer pours a rich dark mahogany color and rests in my glass with no light passing through. A dense , yet fizzy beige colored head of .5 cm foams up and fades to a thin edging soon after the pour. Not a lot of visible bubbles here. Some very scattered lattice if I swirl, more coating and "legs" like a dark wine than lattice.
Aroma is robust! Very fusol and boozy with raisins, rum notes and some brown sugar. I do get a little bourbon and some light pipe tobacco, but no hop presence to be found on the nose.
First sip reveals a medium body with sticky texture and a coating on my palate after each sip. Very spacious carbonation on this beer and a decent hit of warming on each swallow, so much so I feel it on my tongue after each sip.
Flavor is bourbon, rum, black pepper (boozy bite) , some raisin and brown sugar notes. Definitely no hop character on this brew. The ABV isnt hidden in my opinion, but doesnt warm my belly, only my palate.
A pretty robust sipping beer that is a winner from Barreled Souls. You only need one of these!

Revolution "Lumberstruck" (2022) this is fun and rich, though maybe not as complex as my very favorites from Revolution. Kinda reminds me of the Evil Twin "Harlan's Even More Jesus".

Where do yall draw the line between black barleywines and imperial stouts?

A beast this is! Love it. Hasn't changed much since it was fresh (opened this bottle quite a while ago). Love these sippers. Tons of booze, bitter oak, toffee, and tons of burnt brown sugar.

2014 bottle of Third Coast Old Ale from Bells. Wish this were still being brewed! Nose is bursting with fresh caramel candy. A wonderful citrus hop aroma comes through after. Some stone fruit mingles for a bit. The taste is sublime. Mellow hops mixed with intense toffee. Bread, biscuits, graham crackers, plums, an herbal note, and a hint of vanilla. Just lovely.

Sounds great! Do you think 10 years of aging is optimal? I have been wondering how long I should wait before drinking a 2022 bottle.

Optimal is such a subjective term, so I would be hesitant to suggest that. I really love it at 10 years, but I think 7-10 were all great for me. Fresh was awesome - just a different beast. If you have enough, do a little experiment!
