Below is a video of Nate Lanier blind tasting (and he was literally blindfolded in the second round of the tasting) five different IPAs that are categorized as being Supermarket IPAs.

Not to give too much away upfront but I think it was interesting that he conducted a dual tasting. As he as conducting the first round I immediately thought to myself: why the heck would he pour these beers into transparent glasses (Teku) with sunlight hitting these glasses? A big 'fail' IMO. But an interesting tasting nonetheless.

Also, given these are IPAs I thought he should share canning dates. Oh well!?!

Do you folks have a favorite(s) Supermarket IPA?

    Cheers!

It's in my fridge right now. Founders All Day IPA. But, I'm perfectly fine with 4 of the 5 he tasted, not a fan of Goose Island IPA, before or after InBev.

I am familiar with Stone IPA (#5) and Lagunitas IPA (#2). I much prefer Stone (not too bitter for me). However, I regularly drink Harpoon IPA, which I like better than either. It has a slightly lower alcohol content (6%), and could possibly be classed as an American pale ale. It is described as being patterned after an English IPA, but uses American hops. It seems better balanced for my palate.

Sometimes you just don't have the time to search for something new or of higher quality. I call them "in a pinch" beers. Luckily I still think Lagunitas, Burlington Beer Co. , Fiddlehead, Tuckermans and maybe Harpoon IPA will do when you just gotta grab and go!

I actually like all the beers he reviewed, but Lagunitas is definitely my favorite of the bunch. It isn't surprising that Jai Alai tasted old to him. I swear I haven't been able to find a fresh can of that stuff in forever. Even in central Florida and Longmont, CO. Fresh Squeezed is great if you catch it right, but it's one of those beers that falls off a cliff after a few months. So much so that I'd rather had an old ass Jai Alai vs. one from 3 months ago.

I have a simple but sincere message for IPA people.

    Stop it. Get some help.

I remember grabbing a Jai Alai singleton from Trader Joe's at least a year ago. I enjoyed it, but the small allotment was gone in about a week or two never to return.

Beer is sold only at package stores in Rhode island; if it were sold in grocery stores, Grey Sale would be king.
    Cheers.

Why? At this point adding more names can't make things any more confusing, or any less helpful, and is simply a game. Let them have their fun, I think they're bored. And they seem harmless enough.

We have much better IPAs as our grocery store IPAs.

Eventually this IPA "sub style" will be broken down like this...

Supermarket IPA to drink in the shower with
Supermarket IPA to do lawn work with (sub to the sub, drink during or after)
Supermarket IPA to smoke weed with

    My sub style...screw it, I'm having a lager

Edit: Sorry @cavedave I accidentally quoted you for some reason ha, but my snarky comment remains the same. In general, take it as the joke it is suppose to be

Stone IPA is super solid. I'd also throw the high-octane stovepipes into the ring here too. I'm good for a 19.2oz can of 90 minute or Sixpoint Resin every once and a while.

Strange. I looked at the Tree House website and I saw a mind-numbing variety of beers. But his palate seems to eliminate enjoyment of full bodied beers.

my beer journey has taken me beyond the ipa craze but to each their own. Let people enjoy whatever they like without criticism, in my opinion.

I think he proves you need more than a sip to evaluate a beer.

I can't speak for Nate but I suspect he formulates much of his beer appreciation from sniffing those beers.

If you take note, he very much sticks in nose into those fancy Teku glasses, which very effectively concentrates aroma, and take deep sniffs using his 'dominant' nostril. Actually sipping (drinking) the beer is his secondary evaluation aspect.

    Just my thoughts here.

    Cheers!

I hear you, but I could never truly evaluate a beer that way!
