Madness! I’ve had 72 of them, which is definitely 72 more than I should have!

The worst beer lists are unfairly all lagers which are usually only mildly offensive. If it were truly a worst list it would contain very badly made IPAs or dodgy fruit beers. Floris and Pink Killer have a lot to answer for but escape the wrath of the beer connoisseur for some reason.

There are actually an IPA, Fruit Beer, English Pale, and ESB on the list.

Floris and Pink Killer don't have to answer to me, since I've never encountered them. I'll never rate them. Ho-hum lagers are almost unavoidable in some circumstances. In the 70s into the 80s, when we went out for dinner or a drink, we generally drank AALs because the alternative was water or bad wine. To me the AALs were never great, almost always mediocre. The situation has gotten better, but with the rise of high alcohol beers, fruity beers, barrel aged beers, and the reduced popularity of British style pale ales, amber lagers, and other moderate brews, a mediocre lager might be the best option for me even at a restaurant with 10 to 20 taps. Unfortunately, most of the AALs have less character today than they had 50 years ago. I personally don't usually rate a beer that I really don't like, but some people do, and that is their prerogative.

Thank you for saving me the time and effort required to respond to the prior post. His lament is one I hear all the from the AAL macro crowd. While I can't entirely disagree with their argument, it always strikes me as odd. They never seem to maintain that AAL macros are any good, just that they don't have any unusual, particularly nasty, off flavors. So apparently just making a bland, innocuous, insipid, watery glass of swill is perfectly acceptable and isn't something deserving of a poor rating. So sorry, but I completely disagree.

Ha!! I'm at 66 on that list. I'm not really actively chasing it, but below average beers find their way into my hands every so often. Not a problem! :beers::beers:

Pacifico, Miller Lite, Busch, Heineken. I can't believe all my favorite beers are so worst.

Similar to you, I drank about 15-20 on the list in the early 80s. I actually kind of like malt liquor back then. After my trip to Europe after college in 86', my days of drinking crap American beers was over. I was imports and micro brew/early craft.

A slightly insulting email as I am certainly not from the “AAL macro crowd” as may have been suggested. I love well made lagers with quality ingredients. I generally hate some AALs eg Coors Lite or Sapporo have left me gagging, but the majority are relatively innocuous. My lament would be more that a “worst” list is that of beers that are genuinely disgusting but somehow manage to be a thing. I wouldn’t say AALs are disgusting just cheaply made. I find worst beer lists a bit predictable and boring because it’s going to be mass produced lager that is low quality but a nonetheless a successful product.

Agree with you there. And my apologies, I didn't mean to insinuate that you're part of the AAL macro crowd. However, your observation really is one that I hear all the time (usually by those who are big fans of macro AALs). It's right up there with "but they're supposed to taste like that," and "it's not fair to give macro AAL's a poor score; you need to review/rate to style."

My take is that beers receiving a poor review score generally deserve the review score they get. In the case of macro AAL's, most have been reviewed by hundreds, sometimes thousands of BA members. So I think it's fair to say that there's a pretty strong consensus that these are not great beers (despite the fact that they're hugely successful in the marketplace). Perhaps part of the reason is the review system employed by BA (appearance, aroma, taste, etc.). I know that typically when I review a beer, in order for it to garner a high score it needs to have good head retention, a wide panoply of different smells (the aroma profile), and considerable flavor (with extra points for layers of flavor and complexity). For a lager, I'm also looking for things like crispness, smoothness, a good finish, and so on. These are not areas where macro AAL's tend to shine, and so I think it's understandable that they receive poor review scores (and so tend to make up the bulk of most people's "worst beer" lists).

My apologies for being overly wordy, but I thought your response merited a more serious response than the somewhat flippant, off the cuff comment in my previous post.

    Cheers!

Alot of these beers aren’t even that bad if we’re being honest. Their scores are sabotaged from early years of reviews where anything made by Miller coors or Anheuser Busch was “(insert animal) piss”
