    This.
Also had some rye in it that added to the haze.
There was an extreme amount of dry hop that also gave a "haze" at times.
Beer was brewed with Cal Ale.
They might have biofined but pretty sure not.
Back then they would also mash in with water from the well so if was a wet winter and the well was really full it had a lovely minerality to it. Wet slate and granite.
GF did not "fuck" the beer up. There was just never any way they would recreate the beer on two completely different systems and water sources.
If GF had just used the nelson recipe and called it something else to begin with and dial in the recipe they might have gotten there. But they did not. Just stuck the Nelson label on it and cashed in.
Maybe someday someone can give a Ted Talk on the dozens of idiotic things GF did once the Salesmen and Bean Counters took over. But not today.
    Cheers.

Having this tonight from a visit to the Northeast Kingdom last week. Canned on 8/20 - the name is a goof on IPA. Hopped w Nelson/Riwaka and Simcoe - Nelson takes center stage starting w/an absurd Sauv Blanc aroma - finishing bone dry w/a little back end grapefruit/lemon pucker. Shaun still has his fastball.

Nelson has been my favorite hop for quite a while now so I always make sure to buy Nelson hopped beer when I see it. The previously mentioned Other Half beers are great. Carton recently rereleased their Odub variant 07750, dry hopped with Nelson and Joe B Town, their Nelson dry hopped lager. My favorite of all might be Ripple, by Kane.

One thing I’m surprised hasn’t been addressed is the inconsistency of Nelson.

I remember reading this profile about 5 years ago when I got back into beer and Nelson was big…

This being said I find significant/overpowering notes of diesel and rubber with some Nelson beer. (Even more so with Riwaka) Some people say they love this but I do not. I fell in love with the dank/white wine/grape profile and not the exhaust pipe.

This being said… some of my all-time favorites SARA IPA’s have been their Nelson ones. Spots & Dots and Professor Patent (rebranded as Legitimate Weekend). These all-Nelson IPA’s can be insanely good or not, depending on the batch.

Down here in the South Bay, we have Alvarado Street Brewery the nearest place to get some great beer.

The 2 that come to mind immediately are "Nelson Baby!" and "Southern Hemi" which both have Nelson predominant hops.

My dream beer that is out of reach is Trillium's "Stillings Street"

    McIlhenney Muntz

Are 2 that I recall being really good. I've traded for Hymn twice now and Muntz came in a blind box trade and ended up being the best beer.

I do like Nelson hops. Unfortunately I don't keep track of specific hops in the beers I try, but that said, Nelson hopped brews do stand out a bit whether 100% or a blend. I recently had Rhinegeist Camp Nelson IPA and it was/is fantastic. I don't have a favorite. They're all damn good for the most part.

12 oz cans from a variety 12 pk mfgr date 6/10/24 into a Becker.
L: SRM 3 Pours 98% clear light caramel with a highly domed 1" slightly off white foamy head, medium lush steady carbonation, VG head retention, a mix of medium lacing with dental and loose sheeting all around the glass.
S: Canned tropical fruits, a hint of lemon grass, basically clean.
T: Taste follows aroma plus succulent fruits, grains, distant pastry dough, a touch of peach, it is mildly tropical, light lemon in the linger along with an extremely light dash of resin.
F: Brisk then smooth & lightly silky medium bodied feel with a pillowy soft center that transitions to a flattened-out lightly drying finish. It is a bit juicy.
O: Lovely soft fruit tastes and an incredible mouthfeel which is sort of meringue-like. What a gem from this brewery. It is outstanding in its style.

I've never had OG AN. But I believe their 'Muntz' IPA is the "new and improved" version of AN. Muntz is next level good as is this all Nelson Mcilhenney brew. Cheers!!

10-4. I may have to figure out a way to acquire a few McIlhenney beers. I've heard nothing but good things.
