A late reply, but I happened to have gotten the Croce three-album collection on vinyl and am listening to it now. There are a ton of great lyrics in the "turn of a phrase" way in the mix of songs.

I never noted before, but in a few his later songs, he sounds a lot like Gordon Lightfoot.

As for beer, I last had a Port City IPA, but am currently having malted barley in a different form, some Compass Box Scotch.

I guess there is some Gordon similarity for sure. I liked that he could go from the fun rowdy stuff to slow & thoughtful

I was mainly noting it on the very few songs I didn't recognize and specifically noted the voice. There was always a part of each song where it became more obvious, but a couple reminded me specifically of Gordon on Sundown (I'll post the link here since I now have another post):

I'll also say, there were a couple songs that reminded me loosely of the some Buffett songs of the late 70s (see Five Short Minutes). Related, but not driving that thought, is that the Buffett documentary I watched indicated that Buffett sort of initially got promoted to fill the gap Croce's death left.

I think on simpler terms. I would say Jim's a little more from the heart, Gordon was a little more complex, song-wise

I wasn’t thrilled with this fresh, but a year later the Mortalis BA As Above So Below aged on Stagg Jr and adjuncted with marshmallow is EXTREMELY AWESOME right now. Yeah the picture sucks. Whatever.

Hey, if your microwave ever starts tripping a breaker, replace the interlock switch. Under $20 and you’re good as new!

Absolutely dig Jim Croce. The first song in my set is Working at the Carwash Blues.

Zappa confusing as hell. No normal people tapping their feet to 17.5/4.3 time in the key of G sharp flat harmonic.

I can see that. One of the links on a search I did on him was of a thread post along the lines of "what is the best song to introduce someone to Croce?"

The first response was perfect. Think the person will like the introspective, thoughtful stuff like Time in a Bottle or the Roller Derby Queen stuff?

I argued that song has some of the best lyrics he had other that Operator. Then I recalled some of the lyrics to the just listened to Lover's Cross... different contexts, but so fun to listen to.

Actually listening to what seem like demo tape from a 1966 "album" Spotify has listed. Fun stuff, even if a lot of it doesn't sound like what he became.
