Have to give the award for The Most Reasonable Bathroom Graffiti I’ve seen in a good while to the OH Philly taproom, where I saw scrawled above one of the urinals…

Yeah, I bought Sweet Potato Fries and Every Gazillion Ever and both were brewed in DC unfortunately. I think Like Like Whoa Whoa was brewed in Brooklyn, not sure about any of the others.

I went to the DC brewery yesterday to have some of the collabs. Channel charged was really good.

What do people think the issue is with the DC brewed beers? Is it a water profile thing?
I picked up a few 4 packs to go from different locations. Big Strata vibes was brewed in Brooklyn, and after cracking a can it seemed oxidized and I regret buying it. Hopefully the other cans are better.
DC brewed space diamonds is tasting great. So I'm curious to see what others think the DC beers are worse.

I shudder thinking about the amount of time spent in OH lines back in the day, ha

My honest opinion is that its arbitrary. If you swapped labels or stamps on two beers so that it looked like a BK brewed beer was done in DC and vice versa, people would still find a way to complain. A buddy of mine lives local to the DC spot and has been sending me stuff from there since they opened, when we get a chance to swap things, and there have only been a few that I didn't enjoy a ton, which I can say the same for any OH beer at any brewery. I believe it was 9th Anniversary that the Anny IPA was brewed in DC and no one was up in arms over that. I did find it odd it wasn't brewed at Centre, unless batches were brewed both places, but all the cans I had were all DC I believe.

Yeah, it’s probably mostly the power of suggestion. When the DC location first started brewing there was a lot of commentary that the quality was lower, true or not. I think some of that reputation has stuck even though whatever “problems” they may have had were rectified, whether said problems existed to begin with. I admit I’m guilty of being influenced by it. I should just stop checking the bottom of the cans!

Yeah I hear you, I only check these days just to see when it was actually canned if I am unsure. At this point I try to be happy that we have access to so much great beer so regularly versus showing up hoping I was going to get two 4 packs to take home and a growler fill!

As someone who frequented OH DC in its early days, I can assure you those quality complaints were real for roughly the first two years. It even got to the point where I just stopped giving them chances. Around early 2023, however, a few of us locals noticed marked quality improvements coming out of the DC brewery. At the time, I noted the OH folks had just given a presentation on their then-recent discoveries on how water mineral content can affect brewing and speculated that that might have been the culprit behind their early stumbles. In any event, I no longer notice a difference in quality between NYC and DC, and I don't include location in my buying consideration.

I thought so, but, as far as I know, this was OH's first stab at brewing outside the state of NY. Maybe the learning curve was more substantial than they expected?

Had this last evening. Canned in DC on 8/20. Excellent! My anti-DC bias has been defeated.

I think that was a thing of the past. I think the quality of beers brewed across the different locations has been pretty even for about a year or so. I guess as I’m thinking I’d say that the DC beer has gotten much better and I wouldn’t go out of my way to avoid DC beers like I had before. That being said I ever have a OH beer that just really hits it’s usually been a BK one. I think the Brooklyn beers still have a higher probability of having that magical OH quality, but these days not even all the BK ones hit on that level and have often been on par with DC and FLX.

I saw some brewing equipment in a Google photo of the new lakeshore location. Come to think of it there are also tanks in the photos of “Ramova” in Chicago. Why don’t they list Chicago as a location on their main website? Also, are they brewing out of there? Haven’t heard about it seen any other half Chicago beers out in the wild.

They are brewing out of Chicago. Todd Haug is the brewer. Former Surly and FFF brewer. Beers have not been good. But they have a decent amount of the brews on tap and in cans from the East coast.
