So glad you are digging right in!! As for the name, definitely odd that it matches the Lagunitas beer! Cheers my friend!

Gnarlywine from Bottle Logic. An American barleywine aged in a single bourbon barrel. Never bottled, but enjoying a crowler (filled 10/3/2024) virtually with @DIM . 15% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a very dark brown with a half inch of head. The nose is fantastic. Burnt toffee, dark fruit, light hops, and some bourbon.

The taste is insane. The barrel has a big influence here, but it's so smooth. Toffee is strong, and a really nice hoppy note comes through on the taste. Reminds me of grapefruit peel. What a combination. The dark fruit is there - prunes, figs, and a touch of red wine.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a nice long finish. The bourbon comes through quite a bit on the aftertaste. This is just a great beer. I wish it was bottled, but I'm happy to have a crowler!

Happy to find a few packs of this the other day.

Been a loooong time since I had an OG. It's even better than I remember with a wonderful balance between sweet and bitter. Skews just a bit towards the sweet with plenty of caramel and brown sugar up front. The finish adds lightly bitter citrus, faint pine, and a hint of date. Glad they finally got around to bringing this beast back!

@Beersnake Tim, sorry to hear the news about a member of your family.
That said, you and @DIM have way too much with your surprise tactical strikes, very impressive!
After a hike yesterday in the Pisgah NF, we stopped in Brevard, NC at Oskar Blues for lunch and a pint. Trolling their beer fridge i was able to pick up some Ten Fidy and variants and try out a four-pack of a Rum BA American Barleywine. Wow, better than expected, getting a raisin heavy with toffee background base beer while the rum BA touched things up with some vanilla and coconut and of course a nice warming finish with each sip. Well done! Rated 4.32.
    Cheers!
    Tom

    Any suggestions?

Tree House makes excellent barleywines, have you tried any of theirs? Does Vermont allow mail order alcohol? I get a lot of barleywine that way. Aside from that all I can tell you is stock up when you see it!

Had to look back at Tim's posts to find out what you were referring to. So sorry @Beersnake , brain cancer is a terrible thing. It took my father and mother-in-law. I'll be thinking of you and your family.

Apologies if this has been posted before, and the webpage is from July 7-

    https://www.thereferend.com/results

If one scrolls down to the 6th image there's a menu page called Barleywines of the Commonwealth, which looks amazing. Figured I'd share it with the cognoscente.

Yep, visiting is on my to-do list. That menu also lists a faro, which is a style I've yet to try.

Enjoying one from the incredibly generous @Beersnake tonight, Five Rings from Container. This was aged on toasted French oak soaked in bourbon.

The oak is prominent, lending an almost herbal, or anise, or tea like note to the sweet caramel, sugary figs, and whiskey exhale. I'm enjoying this overall but that oak is just a bit incongruous to me. Thanks Tim for the unique offering! Looking forward to your review of this one.

I look forward to opening my can shortly! Definitely wasn't sure about this one - grabbed it when I visited Container Brewing in Vancouver and saw the word "Barleywine"! Couldn't resist!

Burlington Beer Company has had some decent barleywines, maybe on the sweeter side, and a few with maple additive. But enjoyable. You can probably get to Tree House in Greenfield in a decent road trip.
River Roost in White River Junction has a bourbon barrel aged barleywine on tap right now. They are a very solid brewery , but I havent had their barleywine before.

    Good luck!
