You need to move. Lots of locals around here making world class beers.

And I agree it was easier to find good stuff when the scene was smaller, but I applied some drive and weeded out the good from the bad.

    There we go! Thank you!
“More competition means better beer” MY ASS. That logic assumes everyone’s buying beer for it’s quality.

Just mediocre beer taking up shelf space.

To a point. But there’s a lot of brewers making world class beers, more than years ago. You just need to wade through a ton of beer that are currently hot and the stores think everyone wants to buy. The NE IPA fad, where people continually lined up for a “new” beer every week really pushed this over the edge.

there’s still too many IPAs and fruited sours on the shelf for my taste, but I’m hopeful the pendulum is swinging back toward a wide variety of styles.

I really like Cold IPAs, because most that I've had have just been really clean-drinking WC IPAs, or borderline IPLs. Didn't need to be a trend or sub-style, IMO, just a shade on the spectrum, and making it a "trend" I think devalued it in the perception of a lot of people: "Oh great, another IPA trend. Pass."

Or even really good beer taking up shelf space, but there's so much of it that you can't find any of it fresh.

That's really mostly an IPA problem. For lagers, the really good ones have been elbowed out by A glut of mediocre options, IMO. Not that finding world-class lagers was ever all that easy, but my selection seems to be more limited as more mediocre local options take up shelf space.

I don’t think that post is talking about something like a Northern German Pils…

What do you dislike about them?

I don't need to move. My area makes great beer. But my state has an insane amount of breweries and they're definitely not all making great beer. Most of them make mediocre beer. It isn't bad, but I don't need countless breweries all making the same styles and pushing imports and shit from other states off the shelf. There are too many mediocre breweries.

I agree, but I've figured out how to avoid them and only purchase the good stuff.

Damnit I was too many beers deep and that took wayyy too much effort...

The TL,DR version is as such...

    -beer is great
    -drink what you like
    -quit your belly aching

A clean IPA that doesn't scorch the taste buds is what I buy there is plenty of mistakes out there and they sell truckloads of it.
