Super cool news outta the Canandaigua area.

Two former OH FLX brewers are linking up to open Collage Cellars, which will be making beer, cider AND wine all on-premises at a big new building in the works in East Bloomfield, like 3-4 miles down the road from OH FLX.

Tentative opening is 2026 so we'll be waiting a bit but I think it'll be worth it.

Hey, does anyone know what’s going on with Pantomime Mixtures in Hector, NY? It’s unclear if they have shut down entirely.

I will try calling them Monday then report back.

Last IG post was 2022 and their taproom never reopened after the initial COVID lockdowns so I'm gonna unfortunately assume they're donezo.

at least I got their T-shirt and a couple of bottles. Shame so many crap brewers have outlasted them.

Eckhart Beer is opening soon in Bushwick/East Williamsburg and has their first release this Friday at Beer Witch. Looks like a pretty large brewing space they've built. Seems like they are entirely lager focused, which I think will be welcome in NYC as there is no brewery locally that fits the mold of a Human Robot or Suarez Family (I guess you could argue Wild East but they really do just about every style). Of course we could only be so lucky if they are anywhere close to as good as those two.

Human Robot also does hazy IPA and even had fruited smoothie sours when I was there a couple years back so they're not as style-strict as Suarez. To me they're not that different from Wild East/Threes in terms of portfolio.

Yeah I really enjoyed the bottles I had from them too, think I still have the kriek left in my cellar too.

I do find it odd when breweries just... float on into the ether and never say a word about it. I get a closure is a very tough thing for a lot of reasons, but I do also think you owe it to your customers -- especially since this is an industry where people are VERY tied to and supportive of the spots they love -- to at least say 'hey we gave it a go but this is no longer tenable, appreciate the support yadda yadda."

New Paltz Brewing was one closer to me that closed down for the initial COVID wave and not only never reopened but their last Facebook post is from May of 2020 just saying "we plan on re-opening for to-go sales very soon, Maibock tasting great as always" and then never posted anything again. That's really shitty.

Pantomime’s last Facebook post was June 2022, update img their phone number. Which I did call and it immediately went to the busy tone. And yet, Google still says “Temporarily Closed.” Whatever that means. I’m still going to hold out hope, and might swing by over the holidays to knock on the door. It’s really too bad, their program was very interesting and the beers were all exciting.

The fact that the phone is still available is a sign that there might still be hope for you.

will definitely be checking them out. NYC does have some very quality lager makers, so it’ll be interesting to see how they fit into the mix. I always considered threes the OG NYC lager brewery. As others have mentioned, wild east plays in that lane very well. Even some other breweries pump out some killer lagers - KCBC, Grimm, evil twin, killsboro, and the list goes on. Definitely gonna check these guys out tho.

    Really cool news here:

Now & Later (one of the better beer bars in the state, in Syracuse) is closing its location in Tipp Hill and moving downtown. People in that neighborhood were understandably super bummed but they found a new tenant.

Aurora Brewing is moving into that spot and is looking to open up by I think the post said February. Makes all the sense in the world; Syracuse is making huge strides in beer the last 3-4 years and Aurora already has a big distribution presence there.

Now & Later still exists and Cuse gets another great brewery. Everyone wins.

The quote from when Human Robot opened: "Human Robot is named for the two styles of beer the team brews. Human refers to the classic, European-style beers, while the Robot side is a reference to more modern, out-there techniques that yield hazy IPAs"

But they are definitely more well known for their lagers, and is more of their focus. If you look at their draft list right now, it's 9 Czech/German-style lagers, 3 IPAs, 1 Fruited Sour, and an Irish Dry Stout.

Oh for sure the lagers and traditional stuff are their specialty and raison d'etre, but Suarez has never made a single modern hazy IPA or fruited kettle sour. Also not commenting on the quality, both are fantastic, just saying one is way more dogmatic about the style focus than the other.

Pale Ale not IPA, but Hecto is in that realm. It's hopped with Citra, Mosaic, and Motueka. So even they aren't totally pure with their embrace of traditional styles. No brewery can escape having to throw a bone to the hazy fans.

Hecto is crisp as shit tho and is way more of a modern take on an old school East Coast IPA than it is a hazy.

Unrelated: New Albany location of The Real McCoy slated for early 2025. Got a very modern vibe to it versus their current literally-in-a-house taproom(s).

I will say, and this not a knock whatsoever but, IDK how a place like this is opening a third (and super expensive) taproom. Like the beer is very solid and they do a wide range of styles but nobody locally talks about them. They genuinely seem kind of forgotten against what Fidens/Unified/Common Roots/Wayward Lane/Mixed Breed and a lot of others are doing.

And while this new spot is literally IN a massive apartment complex so you’ve got a captive audience, it’s also out of the way enough (read: like a half mile from the Warehouse District) that they won’t be getting foot/random traffic.

Absolutely wish them the best of luck and I’ll be checking it out right as they open, just odd.

Yea that's the closest to being in the ballpark, but even compared to HF Edward which it's probably inspired by it's still much more on the drier side. I feel like it's hazy appearance is more incidental than intentional.

I also just remembered one called Believe You Me I had years ago that was even a little further in the soft hoppy direction to come across a bit like a modern hazy/NE pale ale, but seems like they retired that one.
