Double Barrel Apsis from Temporal Artisan Ales in Vancouver, Canada. A blend of Caribbean rum barrel-aged munichwine and barleywine that was double barrel aged in a rum barrel. Then finished in a Sorghum bitters barrel for an extra year. 14.47% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a very dark brown with zero head. The nose is clove, nutmeg, light rum, slight black licorice, light chocolate, toffee. Very interesting and definitely different from anything I have smelled.

The taste is awesome. Definitely more on the bitter side. The clove and nutmeg are strong, along with a bit of cinnamon. Now getting vanilla, bitter oak, grass, slight pipe tobacco, burnt toffee, light molasses, black licorice, rum, and a bitter piney hops. So complex and intense. Really loving this one, and it evolves as I take additional sips. It's really fun when a beer is an adventure that changes throughout the glass.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a slightly boozy and spicy aftertaste. Long finish. Overall, a wonderful example of a barleywine/munichwine combo.

Codespeaker from Modern Times. Strong ale with 100% Munich malts and aged in tiny horsey bourbon barrels. 14.1% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours very dark brown (almost black) with a thin layer of head. The nose is toffee, bread, crème brûlée, vanilla, brown sugar, and bourbon.

The taste is fantastic. Tons of salted toffee, vanilla, figs, prunes, bread, biscuits, coffee cake, corn, oak, and bourbon. Really interesting. Not sweet and not bitter. Just a great balance and wonderful integration of flavors.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a wonderful salted toffee aftertaste. The ABV is really well hidden. This is just a really nice beer to sip and enjoy.

Well, this was downright tasty. It wasn’t flat but so thick that the bubbles had to fight like hell, I think. Deep and rich, made me take it nice and slow. Good stuff.

Having a Casita Brewing BBA Barleywine, getting major dark fruit notes along with some toffee in the aspirations. For as long as this was barreled, the impartation was more balancing than flavorful.
    Cheers!

This is a More Brewing collaboration with Goose Island. Double barrel barleywine aged 18 months in Elijah Craig rye then 10 year white grape Brandy barrels for 11 months. Hell yeah.

First, this is one of those super sexy sticky barleywines where the legs are still sliding seductively down the sides a minute after you put the glass down.

What a great combination of barrels! The Brandy is more noticeable in the aroma, but there is some brown liquor and plenty of caramel-y goodness. Smells great but it tastes even better.

The grape notes add an interestingly vibrant layer to an already great barrel aged barleywine. There are just so many layers of warm, sticky goodness here. The booze, the molasses and caramel, the toasty vanilla marshmallow, the booze soaked grape pie, and so much more. This is a helluva great beer.

2012 Harvest Ale from J.W. Lees. Amazing. The nose is bursting with super ripe figs, leather books, mild caramel, and a bit of maple candy.

The taste is perfect right now. 14 years is a sweet spot! Huge notes of figs, caramel, butterscotch, an earthy note, newspaper, and a bit of pipe tobacco. Super smooth.

Well tonight I am in Pennsylvania for the Holidays. Decided I can drink a big one to celebrate (18%). This is Barreled Souls and their Big Bang Barleywine, aged in Woodford Reserve barrels and then a second aging in Bookers Bourbon barrels. Grand total of aging for 23 months and 1 day.
Beer is 2.5 years past its bottling date, which doesnt concern me even a little!

    onto my review:
Sampling a cellar temp 500 ml bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled on 7/19/2022. Been in my cellar for 1.5 years.
The beer pours a deep dark mahogany with some ruby highlights. Very little light passes through the glass.
A creamy beige head of 1.5 cm foams up and rests on the surface of my glass. remains as a pretty deep surface covering throughout the sampling. Very good head retention for such a high ABV!
Aroma is dark malt and very rich bourbon notes. Some brown sugar and vanilla too, with definite fusol booze notes too. No hop character that I can detect. Smells like a boozy barleywine to me!
First sip reveals a medium body with smooth texture. Beer is a little thinner than I thought with no syrupy feel that big barleywines often have. Carbonation is mild and soft and this beer drinks pretty easy for a big brew.
Flavor is bold and malty with brown sugar, vanilla, some dark fruit and a sort of earthy cinnamon note. Of course a good amount of bourbon kicks in too. Again no hop notes and the beer definitely tends to be a little sweeter, but not candy like at all.
I also dont get any warming on the swallow. This is an enjoyable big beer that could be very dangerous if I didnt know it was 18% Id drink it much faster than I will. Nice barrel aged big beer!

On a positive note, I went to Burlington Beer Company yesterday and there were 3 barley wines on the menu!
I tried all 3 and they were yummy!
The one on the right was dark due to the maple syrup they added.

2023 Father Time from River North. My last beer from my Tavour days. Liking this more now than I remember, but it’s pretty hot (16%). Big butterscotch and caramel here. I’m guessing this would age well for 5-10 years, but I’m trying to drink down everything that’s been sitting

Boulevard/3 floyds- Deep Flux - pale barleywine ale

Having some port/brandy-aged cheese and this seemed like it’d go well. It does. It also would’ve gone well if I was eating like, mustard and Christmas light shards. But I’m not, and all the things are delicious. Minus a millionth of a point for excessive floaties. Plus many millionths of points for being tasty.

Humble Forager/Forager Brewing collab Elm 33mo BBA English Barleywine, 14% ABV. Pours thick and black with a ring of brown bubbles. Aroma is bourbon, fig, and vanilla. Taste is bourbon, fig, vanilla, chocolate, and caramel, quite sweet, faintly bitter. Excellent mouthfeel, overall world class. Nicely complex, drink slowly, let it warm.

F'ing incredible, now my 7th favorite beer. Hopefully they come out with this one more often. Currently it's only available in their 5th Anniversary mixed pack. I'll have to buy more packs ($35 a pack though). I have two left to try from the pack (one BBA stout, one BBA barleywine), and then the two bombers one BBA stout, one BBA barleywine).

I'll echo @VodkaPong87 's recent post with a Father Time from River North. My bottle is from 2022. 15.6% ABV.

Opened at fridge temp but allowed to warm for a bit before tasting. Pours a very dark brown with minimal head. The nose is toffee, bread, honey, bourbon, rye, figs, almonds, and a slight note of sherry.

The taste is phenomenal. Tons of salted toffee, caramelized sugar, Crème brûlée, vanilla, bourbon, brown sugar, molasses, plums, raisin, and honey. Lovely! Such a nice surprise.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a nice sweet toffee aftertaste. One of the better barleywines that I've tasted this year. I will definitely grab more if I ever see them!

Another incredible BBA Barleywine from Humble Forager, this one without any add-junks, unless bourbon is an add-junk.
