I tend to score beers higher than others. Still, I'll stick with my rating, love that Wheatwine. Do they still brew it?

I know they still have that same '23 stock I sent you, and I think a new version will be brewed for '25 later this year

Big Chuck Hunter: Kentucky - a bourbon barrel aged barleywine from Varietal. From
Huge thanks to @snaotheus for this one in the barleywine/stout BIF. 12.1% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a murky brown with minimal head. The nose is wonderful. Salted toffee, vanilla, slight banana, malts, figs, and a candy note.

The taste is just wonderful. Werther's caramel candy, raisins, figs, marmalade, bread, vanilla, and bourbon. Lovely!

    The mouthfeel is also fantastic.

@DIM, have definitely found it easier to be on the pouring side of the beer buffet. 8 of 10 festival goers are pretty chill but man the other 2 can be some entertainment, good or bad!

    Enjoying a 2024 Bigfoot.
    Cheers!

Brewers notes: Our 2024 Barley Wine is an expression of our Wisconsin Terroir. Our Diploma Master Brewer, Daniel Carey, hand selected the Wisconsin Chinook hop that are the signature of this powerful beast of a brew. All perfectly balanced with the sweetness of selected Wisconsin malt. Savor this very big beer at F 45 degrees and it will reward you with an open embrace.

chilled can poured into a treehouse sniffer glass received in a big from @Bishop

A pencil, thick, one finger top foam cap reduces to a ring. Active carbonation in the liquid and on the sides of the glass the liquid is a translucent copper.

aRoma is a subtle toffee, hint of caramel

First sip is toffee with an alcohol feel but no burn. Boozy , bit of a tang on the finish, little bit of the hops, some sherry -esque notes

medium mouthfeel , sudsy active carbonation

this is a barley wine , my head is buzzing , no heavy machinery should be operated , I m not driving any more tonight

Another fantastic barleywine courtesy of @DIM. Wish I had the palate to identify the flavors in this one.

Not sure if it's the rye but this is really smooth. Thanks Dan!

Glad to hear you like it Harry! The wine barrels take that in a unique direction I think.

The Mustache Awoke Before Dawn - Aurora Brewing

Took a second go at this one, and must say, aside from being a peculiar take on the American Barleywine style, it is actually pretty good. The orange peal is definitely interesting. This time with an intense aged Havarti, and found the pairing to be fairly neutral.

I was trying to come up with a witty rejoinder and failed repeatedly, so I'll just use some corporate jargon and say thank you for your attention in this matter.

Thought I'd try a comparison tonight.

I enjoy fresh Bigfoot but like some others it's very close to a DIPA. Following that line the 2019 is like a strong, malty pale ale. There's something "off" about it, a sort of dishwater taste. I was gonna try a blend but not sure it will help.

My oldest bottle is 2022; probably won't keep it around for much longer.

Bigfoot can have kind of an awkward phase before it turns into sweet deliciousness... Maybe forget about the 2022 for 6-8 more years:slight_smile:

Sucaba is mighty fine but, best ever?

Revolution has a better barrel program priced better. Not a darn thing wrong with FW though.

Ok, I'll tag it "open in 2032 as per Dan" and hope there's an appreciation thread still going. That will also give @Resistance88 more time to become acquainted with the style.

'Better' to me is a stretch .
The price factor is a major player, but to say Better overall isn't fair.

What i do agree with is that Rev is the PizzaPort of Stouts.
Sometimes it's hard to even tell that their beers, not VSO variants are aged in a barrel due to overwhelming sweetness.
Had a fresh Cafe Deth last night and barely pickec up any barrel. Parabajava knocks it out of the ballpark.

    Sucaba has a 100 here and 4.32 (33,282)on untappd
Straight Jacket has a 96 here and 4.21 on (34,724 ratings) untappd.

    I don't care for ratings, but................:sunglasses:

    FW Wins

    Fw = Best
    Rev = Cheaper
