Smoked Beer Appreciation Thread (2025)

Not sure if it still around but I used to love me some Stone Smoked Porter-Awesome with a loaded burger or a plate of BBQ ribs

 

My first post in this year's thread is from just across the Potomac and Bluejacket brewery. This Smokin' George smoked porter is a collaboration brew with Moor Beer Company out of the UK (might help explain why I hadn't heard of them before this).


A nice tan head atop the black body. The foamy part falls fairly quickly, but you could barely tell if you were eye level with the middle of the glass, given the remnants it leaves. Smoke notes in the nose have a backyard grill kinda vibe - one before the new meat has gonna on, but there's still aromas of the last meal cooked there. The roasty malt is rich and seems to be the thing taming the smoke notes.

On the taste, this is a porter first. It has a bit of sweetness, which may be filling out the feel a bit, as it is mildly rich for 6%. I might argue is has a bit of an export stout vibe to it. It's really tasty, although the smoke all but disappears. It sneaks in the late part of each sip, with a slightly acrid bitterness.

So a very good porter, with a light smoky aroma that contains almost all of the somkiness I perceive.

 

Having a collaboration brew from Edmund's Oast in Charleston, SC and Good Word out of Duluth, GA. Lyres, Desires, and Pyres is nicely done, just the right usage of smoked malts on top of a bready malt Märzen.

Oak-smoked double IPA. The flavor combination shouldn't work but it does. Nice citrus up front and smoke in the finish.

I'll have to keep an eye out for that one here on the east side of the cities!

Waldmann Rauchbier

Appearance: Clear dark amber, almost brown, good head.

Smell: Mild smoky aroma, mild sweetness.

Taste: Mild sweetness, then a mix of breadiness, some floral notes, and mild smokiness. Light bodied. Finishes with a light kiss of smoke.

Overall: Finally getting to try Waldmann's rauchbier, as a German style-focused brewery I wanted to try their take on the style. It is an extremely drinkable version, often marzen rauchbiers are very boldly malty, this one is more delicate in flavor and closer to a “session” beer. Glad I got to try it!

I've not had a rauchbier in months, and this beauty from Schlenkerla is fantastic as always. But if I'm honest, it's got me hankering for their Urbock or Eiche. I'll hunt around town for those, and see what I can find. This thread also has me interested in finding a smoked porter or two.
