Picked up a four pack of a new beer from Jack’s Abby called “Light Work”, labeled a Summer Wheat Lager. The description is almost exactly like Modern Hefe. Same ingredients, process, and ABV. Picked up singles of Modern Hefe as well. Might try to do a side by side.
Here’s the descriptions on the cans. It’s weird, Wegmans has Light Work but I couldn’t find any evidence of the beer existing on the internet.
Good find. At first I was thinking that this lager was probably made to be the source of krausening for their “Modern” Weizen, but reading the can label has me confused. This “wheat lager” is their perfect take on a “classic Hefeweizen?”
I actually didn't realize it wasn't an actual Hefeweizen and a lager until I got home. I read the description quickly and saw the ingredients and figured it was their actual Hefeweizen.
Had a Light Work last night while watching the boring draft. First pic is the first pour. Second pic is with the yeast roused and poured in. Second one is definitely more turbid and both do have a somewhat New England IPA look to them. It had tropical fruit notes, but not the same as you’d find in said IPAs. With the yeast poured in the banana/esters came forward. Very refreshing beer that’ll work well in the summer months.
@JackHorzempa I do plan on a triangle blind taste test with Modern Hefe, but I just need someone to pour the beers for me. However, I am curious @JacksAbbyBrewing are Modern Hefe and Light Work the same beer?
And meanwhile the NHl playoffs are on… I’ll keep an eye out for this one, JA sends more stuff here these days. I haven’t seen it yet, just the Porch Fest in terms of summer seasonals.
One way you can do this yourself is to use the exact same glass (or opaque plastic cup) for all three and mark the bottom (use tape or just a sharpie on the plastic cup) with numbers or letters (e.g., two A's and one B) and close your eyes and shuffle the glasses (cups) around. Then smell and taste the three sample and see if notice the 'odd man out'. Then look under the glass/cup and see if the 'odd man out' is marked B. Some folks will conduct multiple trials (e.g., 5 times) and see if they perform consistently. Cheers!
I poured a Weihenstephan Hefeweizen before this one and while we did establish there's color differences with Hefeweizens, I don't recall seeing one this pale yellow and this turbid as Light Work. Now that the Patriots suck I have an interest in the draft unfortunately.
I probably have. Next time I see one I’ll have to snap a picture to compare. This uses Pilsner malt so it makes sense.
