I've only had their Curator Dunkler Doppelbock before this helles. It also was very "middle of the road." My stop had their weissbier as well, but it was way past it's best buy date, so I passed.

Digging my first 6-pack of this stuff:
It's arguably not as good, not as malty in particular, as it's main brother Pilsner Urquell, but it does a very commendable job of playing the malt-hop dance of a good pils with a nice bready sweetness counterbalanced by a zesty little green/black pepper hop zing. Citrusy too. Dry and moreish but not overly bitter either.

I was the hunt for the Hofbrauhaus Helles, couldn't find it, couldn't find anything in the helles/kolsh ballpark that caught my fancy, so I said F it and finally nabbed some Czechvar (cum Budvar cum Budweiser). It's no bad ... and frankly I like a little skunk in my beer, so the green bottle effect works for me.

    Cheers!

Below is a reply/comment I made a year ago for a video review of Budweiser Budvar (Czechvar):

"During my visit to Prague in 2019 I drank many ½ liter draft beers of Budweiser Budvar at the U Medvídků Pub. That pub was a tankovna (tank) pub and needless to say the beer was very fresh. I did enjoy those beers, and fresh is indeed best, but your observations on hopping in that beer is correct. There is not much bitterness to that beer (e.g., at a Helles level of bitterness) and there was little in the way of hop flavor/aroma even when fresh. Still an enjoyable beer to drink.

    Na Zdravi"

Just to confirm: in your homebar Weihenstephaner Helles is your favorite Helles? You prefer it over Original and why?

    Cheers!

Thanks @Blogjackets! I really like that beer. My local Kroger grocery store used to carry it a few years ago but apparently I couldn't buy enough by myself to keep it stocked! Prost!

Luckily, my local bottle shop always has this one (my favorite from Ainger) and Bräuweisse. Cheers.

I'm stupid. Or incredibly racist. I mean, one Western Euro peoples is more or less another.

In your defense, from a historical perspective, the present day Czech Republic is right next to Bavaria and in the 20th century there was a significant number of Germans (i.e., German speaking people) in the regions of Bohemia and Moravia.

And within German proper they did 'appropriate' the Pilsners beer style (sometimes just calling it Pils).

    Prost & Na Zdravi

Borders and language, man -- c'mon.

Then again, I got away with communicating in German while in France, so...

Another Gőller Dunkel for yours truly at the end of my workday. This is one of my favorites from Germany. I'd love to get a chance to drink this fresh on draft. It must be terrific. Prost to all the German beer loving Advocates!

    Cross post from WBAYDN...
Enjoying a second DAB Export while contemplating dinner prep. A touch of biscuit with very light black pepper on the back end.
    Cheers!
