Well, hopefully the beer isn't sitting in a container in the hot sun on the docks or in an un-AC'ed importer's warehouse somewhere...:grimacing:

Knowing some of my local distros, LAST year's surplus is sitting in their warehouse waiting to be passed off to unlucky retailers and customers.

I didn't buy any yet, Jack, so I have no bottles at home to look further. (My fridge is full.) I glanced at the label only enough to see the best-by year, and I didn't get a month/day from it.

In this past it seemed typical for German breweries to use a 12 month best by duration (which is nonsense IMO) but I lately I have encountered some German breweries that consider the best by duration to be 15 months.

    Cheers!

Yeah, I started the thread last year to start the party. Last year this store had 4 cases and they were stacked in a floor display, if I'm remembering correctly, but only two cases of 6-packs are on the shelf this year. Don't know if the store didn't want as much, or if it means there was less at the distributor or the importer.

I'm already looking forward to pre-season football and along with that comes fresh fall brews. I usually like to kick off the season in August with Southern Tier's Harvest Ale...and once we have some cooler temps, I get into some pumpkin ales and Oktoberfests.

Von Trapp just shared a video of oktoberfest rolling down the canning line, with a caption of “t minus 1 week” :triumph:

I've seen some pumpkin beers out and about, but summer isn't over until it hits October (for me).

Local Oktoberfest is a big thing here for some reason, and places like having fresh things and the presentation of German traditions alongside Nashville Oktoberfest, so I doubt we'll see too much. German imports will probably be stale, but that's an expectation. I can usually find some fresher bottles at the higher-end store I'll make a road trip to, so that's probably gonna be September. Sadly, my beloved pumpkin beers and darker, fall-themed lagers as well as Halloween themed stouts are usually rolling out in late August and September, where it's just way too hot. Seasonal creep sucks and takes away from the beauty of summer beers.

I think a lot of the more "hype" brewers start putting their heavier releases late summer-early fall though, so I'm looking forward to hunt down some Veil and Burial releases, and of course roll the dice with Abomination's Rare Fog. Fall also marks the release of 3Floyds Permanent Funeral, so really fall is prime drinking months for me.

I was back in the store so I took a pic of the back label. No batch info.

My guess is that beer was bottled in April.

I just don’t get why they package a beer intended for fall consumption two seasons (i.e., spring) prior. Crazy IMO.

    Prost!

For two years running this beer seems to be the first import (America too) in stores. They either want to be first in the marketplace or they think the boats from Germany are slower than they really are.

Too bad they don't do the same with their winter and spring seasonals.

Do we really think a marzen / lager that may have been packaged in April - will not be good a few months later?? These are not hoppy beers, and they taste just fine, 3 - 6 months - even longer after packaging date - this uber freshness "fetish" on every beer style is just silly, IMO
Not every beer style needs to be consumed within a few weeks of packaging to still taste just fine.
