Made it safe and sound, but did have my wife to guide me.

Except -- now that you've tried what's considered a true Dunkelweiß -- what do you think?

I believe you need to apply some more research as long as you're in the right place(s).

The Vetter version was much more complex. There was a distinct sauerkraut aroma on the nose, coupled with some clove and light chocolate. On the palate the sauerkraut wasn't nearly as pervasive, and it was maltier than I had expected.

It was a fun beer to drink, and I'm very glad I got to try it. Will have to see what else I can find in Wurzburg and Bamberg.

Hmm. That actually doesn't sound appealing to me. I imagine the sauerkraut was a form of DMS, which I don't think is acceptable in a Weiß of any style.

But yeah, that bigger maltiness is a Dunkelweiß character to savor.

I didn't really mind it, but it was a surprise. I've never encountered that aroma in a dunkelweizen before.

I'm more a Weinkraut or pickled sweet red cabbage fan, but I wouldn't want either character in any beer.

I am stranded in Germany. It's not so bad.

    Cross post from WBAYDN...
Totally dig Radeberger Pils, it just hits the palate so nicely with its crackery refreshing nature and bitterness.
    Cheers!

That a very under appreciated German Pils Tom. Great choice!

Winding down work on a Wednesday with a crisp, refreshing Weihenstephaner Helles.
    Prost!

A nice beer and reasonably priced.

I just wish I could find it fresh(er) at my local beer retailers. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Cheers!

One of the beer bar/restaurants near me has it on tap all the time. I'm sure it doesn't turn as quick as some of the other beers (most people just don't appreciate a good German Pils) but it's always a solid choice when I'm there.

I love seeing these beers with English labels. The Oktoberfest is not out yet here. We have a few more weeks. August normally. We will have an Oktoberfest beer tasting in my home Bar in August. We do this prior to the Party on 27th of September. (If any of you are in town let me know) We Pick the Oktoberfest beer we will serve then. The last few years Augustiner & Ayinger won. We will See this year.

When you do see the German brewed Oktoberfest beers, what is their packaged on dates?

    Cheers!

They normally bottle them depending on the brewery in August. We get them fresh. They run between .80 to 1 euro a bottle. I normally pick up four racks of twenty 500ml bottles for the party. What ever is left over is normally gone before winter holidays.

Why the heck do the German breweries package their Oktoberfest beers they send to the US around April? Does that make any sense to you?

    Cheers!

Not really. I could pop into Ayinger this weekend and ask. I will be on my way back from the Airport and can maybe get some insite. They most likley need have time to ship and distribute. Also many breweries make slightly different beers for Export then the brew here.
