I have not seen the Schwarzbier locally, would love to give it a try; Schwarzbier is one of my favorite styles!

how does it compare to other Schwarzbier's you have tried?

The Schwarzbiers that I've had have been few and far between so I can't say whether it's a good one for the style in comparison to others. However, I do really like it if that counts for anything.

It has very light roastiness, a medium mouthfeel, and the head was creamy when first poured, although it ended up being just a ring around the edge on top after a few minutes

I was curious for details about the beers so I looked at von Trapp's website. Strangely it's nowhere to be found. I did note that they describe their beers as being Austrian versions of the styles, whatever that may mean.

I liked the beer mostly because it has only light roastiness, and I would buy it again.

Aroma is faintly beery with some roasted grain in the nose. Light and prickly mouthfeel. Flavor is bready with a finish of vegetable cooking water. I would say this is a pretty average light beer, and not that great compared to so many others in the Helles style. At least it's not too sweet and there is a touch of fruit. From the 500 ml can purchased on the west coast. Number 30831 stamped on the bottom.

Well not exactly German, but it is close. I live on the border between Germany and Austria.

Well, right you are! But if we can include American versions of German beers I guess we can include an Austrian one.

I don't think that's necessarily right, either. After all, both the SN Okto and Stiegl posts could fit easily into the Lager Love thread.

After all, it's not the German STYLE Beer Appreciation thread.

@ATL6245 started this thread and in the OP (with emphasis in bold by me):

"The main criteria are beers made in Germany; however, if you find a non-German based brewery doing a style justice, by all means share!"

And as per the direction above, in post #27, ATL6245 discussed a US brewed Dunkel:

    Prost!

Pretty fresh Bit on a train, a setting where industrial Pilsner just feels right.

Weltenburger Kloster Helles. BBD 02/26. Advertised as "smooth and mild" and I agree. Nothing outstanding here. Good, clean beer that I was happy to try.

I'll just reiterate by pointing to the thread's title and @ATL6245 's "main criteria." Not in bold by anyone.

But let's go ahead and make up the rules as we go, seems to be working wonders for politics these days.:rolling_eyes:

Thanks for the redirect @JackHorzempa. Maybe to help further clarify things: the main purpose of the thread is to revive/promote awareness of some of the world's great beers out of Germany that we all enjoy. However, we all know how challenging it is to get many of those same beers relatively fresh. Around the U.S., there are now many craft beer breweries making these styles fresh and good quality. If someone finds such a brewery, by all means post it. We'd love to know who these breweries are and their enthusiasm and commitment to producing German beer styles well. As long as I can find them, I will always keep Weihenstephaner Helles in the fridge. But it has been a joy to find breweries like Bierstadt, Dovetail, Olde Mecklenberg, Good Word, etc. around the country where we can get a tasty Helles style made good quality and fresh. Hopefully, that makes sense.

    Prost!

That's one I'd like to find some day. A few years ago, for about a year, we were getting their Barock Dunkel here in GA. I was digging that but like what so often is the case it disappeared and I have not seen it since.

My wife makes me keep Weihenstephaner Helles in the bar or the house too. But we don't get it in cans here.

I have a couple days off here. Finished the yardwork and cooling off with a König Pilsener. Floral aroma, flavor is spicy/herbal and doughy cracker-like. Gives a slight sweet impression at first with a soft mouthfeel but that quickly gives way to the hops. Bitterness is moderate and the finish is crisp and dry. Exactly what you expect from a German pils. Prost!

Having a Warsteiner Dunkel with my lunch (ribs & burnt ends). It's actually been a while since I had Warsteiner Dunkel. Funny thing too, I just recently complained about the beer selection at restaurants and this BBQ joiny got it right! Warsteiner Pilsner and Dunkel are options. Dunkel is perfect with BBQ!

Totally agree with the pairing, you were fortunate to have that style available at a BBQ joint!
Enjoying a lovely Doppelbock from Tucher. I bought it back in April but was lost in the bottle shuffle in my beer fridge. Best by Dec 05 2025, this one is drinking pretty darn good. Big on the toasted bread, i am also getting a touch of apple. Hopping is nicely done leaving a style appropriate slight sweetness. Well done, rated 4.28.
    Cheers!

Happy Friday Tom! Most people don't think about it but doppelbock is one of those beers that can you can age in a bottle. Most of them are just fine over twelve months if stored cool or refrigerated. Nice beer!

I love that beer. I can’t say that any of the rest of Warsteiner’s offerings do much for me, but the Dunkel is a treat.

Yep, I still had one left. And it's just as tasty as it was back in May. My favorite beer style.
